alsoitsdarkersideofsociety.InSamarkand,MrBisselladmiresthearchitectural

wonders,whileonhiswaytoBukharahegetsatasteofpolicemethodswhen

suspectedofdrugdealing.InFerghana,heattendsamountainfuneral(葬禮)followed

byastrangedrinkingparty.AndinKarakalpakstan,heissaddenedbytheduststorms,

diseasesandfishingboatsstuckmilesfromthesea.

MrBissellskillfullyorganizeshistoricalinsightsandculturalreferences,making

histaleawell-roundedpictureofUzbekistan,seenfromWesterneyes.Hisjudgment

andreferencesaredecidedlyAmerican,aswellashisdelicatestomach.Astheauthor
