Keywords:films;creationofheroes;heroism;culturaldifferencesIntroductionHeroesarethemodelsofthetimesofwhichspecificculturesrepresentthecharacteristics.People’sconceptionsofheroesreflectbothmodelsaboutwhatheroesarelikeandnarrativestructuresabouthowtheyact(Goethals&Allison,2012:184).Howtobuildaheroicimagethatechoesthespiritoftheneweraisamajorissuethatdeservesourseriousconsideration.Withtheincreasingpopularityanddeepeningofthemassmedia,thestatusoffilms,asanimportantpartofculturalexportinacountry,hasbeenfurtherconsolidated.Filmsaredifferentfromothermediabecausetheyhaveaspecialformofartisticexpression,whichmakestheaudienceresonatewiththeplotsbyreproducingreallifescenes.ChineseandAmericanfilmsarethetwomainstreamsofculturalexportsintheworldfilmindustry.TherearemanythemesaboutherocultureinChineseandAmericanfilmandtelevisionworks.Withheroicspiritworshipemergingasatrend,peoplehavebeguntoregardheroesasthemodelsoflearning.Inrecentyears,theindustryofChinesefilmshasbeendevelopingrapidly.DuringthejourneyofChinesefilmsgoingglobal,theyhavebeenwidelyrecognizedbybothdomesticandforeignmarkets.Chinahasmademanywell-madeheroicfilmswithwell-knownreputationlikeWolfWarriorsseries.ThemostprominentcharacteristicofthefilmsistheprotagonistLengFengcreatingatypicalChineseheroicimage.AmericanheroicfilmsareservedasimportanttoolsfortheUnitedStatestocreatetheheroicimagesrepresentingAmericanspirit.Inthelongarcofhistory,Americanheroicfilmshaveaccumulatedrichexperienceincreatingtheirheroicimages,whichareworthyofreferencingforproducingChinesefilmsanddramas.Avengersseriesarethemostluxuriouspartyconsistingofall-starsuperheroes.Peoplecantakethechancetowatchmultipleheroeswithonlyonecinematicket.Inthefilms,themembersofAvengershaveassembled,andmostofthetimetheycooperatewitheachotherwell.Heroescanreflectthespiritualoutlookofanation,however,theculturalspiritofthefilmcarriestheculturalheritageofacountry,thuscreatingheroeswithverydifferentstyles(鄒翠萍,2016:28).ThispapermainlystudiesthedifferencesofheroicimagesinChineseandAmericanfilmsexampledbyWolfWarriorsandAvengers.TheauthorofthispaperwilldiscussthecausesofthedifferencesbetweenChineseandAmericanheroicimagesfromcross-culturalperspective,soastohaveabetterunderstandingofthetwocultures.Itisoffar-reachingsignificanceforculturalexchangesbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates.AlthoughtherearemanyresearchescomparingthecreationsofcharactersinChineseandAmericanheroicfilms,fewofthemhavecomparedimagesofWolfWarriorsandAvengersfromtheperspectiveofcross-culture.Themainchallengeofthispaperisthelackofcomparativeinformation.Buttherearestillmanycommentariesonthetwoseriesofmoviesandthecomparativeanalysisofthecreationofheroicimagescanbestudiedintensivelythroughextensivereadingandsearching.LiteratureReviewStudiesofHeroCultureAbroadHeroculturemayexertasubtleinfluenceonpeople’scognitions,owingthathumanbeingsmaybewillingtolearntheadvantagesoftheheroes.Forinstance,onceyoungchildrenlearnwhataherois,theyeffortlesslymatchtheconcepttotheirownlistsofextraordinarycharacters,nowlabeledas“heroes”,and,yes,superheroes(Goethals&Allison,2012:184).Whetherit’sdiscussingsuperheroesormythologicalheroes,theconceptofheroismremainsthesame:aheropersonallybearscosts(e.g.,psychological,financial,social)forbenefits(e.g.,material,aesthetic,health)enjoyedbyothers.Thiscanbedoneprimarilyonbehalfofothers,forexample,whenafiremansacrificeshisownsafetytorescueababyfromaburningbuilding,orprimarilyonbehalfofself,suchaswhenanartistsacrificesfinancialsecurity(extrinsicreward)topursuehercraft(intrinsicmotivation)(McMullen,2017:258).Thisstatementmakesthedefinitionofheroicimagesmorevividandspecific,heroesarerespectedandledbyexamples.AnIrishepicdefinesaheroassomeonewhoisgenerallyconsideredtohaveaspecificambitionordestiny(Aitchison,1987:87).Heroesdaretoovercomedifficulties,taketheinitiativetoundertakegreatresponsibilities,andlaunchanunyieldingstruggleagainstthevillainsorthenaturalworld.AfamouspoliticalphilosopherDanielInnerarity(2008)puts,heroismisamodelofsocialorderbasedon“theapplicationofcertainknowledge,orientedtowardssocialconsensus,andimplementedbyaunifyingstate”.Heroismisaformofactioncharacterizedbyaproject:theheroactsbecausehethinkshecanaffectasituation.Actionisprojectedintoafutureconsequence,rationallyanalysedandplanned(Boudreau&Alba,2011:79).InthebookTheMythoftheAmericanSuperhero,JohnSheltonLawrenceandRobertJewett,theauthorsofthisbook,constructarelationshipbetweensuperheroesandpopularculture,politicsandotherfactorsfromaphilosophicalpointofview.Theypointoutthatsuperheroesarecalleduponbypeople,andbelievethatheroes’abilitiesareabovethepoweroflegalandsocialconstruction(吳婧雯,2016:3).StudiesofHeroCultureatHomeModernChineseDictionary(2008)givestheword“hero”thefollowingdefinitions:“apersonwithabilityandbravery”;“notbeafraidofdifficulties,disregardshisownsafety,bravelyfightsforthepeople’sinterests,berespectedbypeople”and“amanwithheroicqualities”.AccordingtoPangShenwei(2019:150),acelebratedlecturerinYunnanNormalUniversity,hepresentsthat“thepracticaldevelopmentofherocultureplaystheroleofideologicalguidance,systemoptimizationandpracticeguidance,andisthefundamentalfollowandactionguidefortheconstructionofherocultureinthenewera”.Heroesderivefromaspecificsocialenvironment,andheroculturesreflectthemassvalueofthesociety(李弋菲,2015:1).Differentculturalbackgroundshavedifferentinterpretationsofwhatkindofpeopleandbehaviorscanbecalledheroesandheroicbehaviors.Heroesareconsideredthehopeoftheentirecountrybypeople.AcademicscholarsLuZaorongandWangXiuproposethatheroworshipexistsinalmosteverytypeofculture.Heroism,resultofheroworship,representsspecialculturalpursuitofacultureandtosomeextentinfluencesthedevelopmentofsociety(盧灶榮,王秀,2006:1).Thecoreofherocultureistoevaluatethesocialvalueofheroes.WangYizhi(2010),ascholarfromShanxiNormalUniversity,insiststhatheroesarethecreatorsandpromotersofhistory.Historicalheroismtreatsheroesasthecenterofthehistoryofmankind.Italsoexcludesthemassfromthepoliticalstageandneglectsthehistorycreatedandpromotedbypeople.ProfessorZhangFu,whoisspecializedinlanguageteaching,considersthatherocultureistheresultofthelong-termstruggleofChina.Ithasdevelopedandmaturedunderthelong-terminfluenceofConfucianism.Thepurposeofourcountry’sheroismistofightforthepeople,thenationandthecountry(張茀,1994:30).ProfessorPanTianqiang(2007:22)insiststhatherocultureintheeastandwestalltalkaboutfatalism,butthefaithofthewesternerscontainsthechallengeandunyieldingtothefate,whiletheheroesintheeastoftenendowthefatewithakindofcompromiseandaccommodation.WanXiaolin(2015:I)isacelebratedscholargraduatedfromCentralChinaNormalUniversity.Sheintroducesthat“Americansuperherofilm,asanewgenreofnewHollywoodmovies,haswontherecognitionoftheaudienceallovertheworld.Itspopularityisduetotheplots,charactersettingsanddazzlingvisualeffects.However,theattractionsofthefilmsarenotlimitedtothat.Infact,thepersonalheroismandstrongpatriotismincludedinthefilmsareimportantreasonswhyviewersappealof”.Itisalsoevidentthatheroismcloselyinterrelateswithpeople’sgusto.SynopsisofWolfWarriorsandAvengersandtheCreationofHeroicImagesintheFilmsSynopsisofWolfWarriorsTherearecurrentlytwofilmsinWolfWarriorsseries.WolfWarriorsseriesreallypresentmilitarywars.Thefilmsalsoorganizeaspecialforcesteamandhigh-poweredsoldierscalledWolfWarriorslandingonthebigscreenforthefirsttime.Thefilmstellthestoryofanobodybecomingaherowhosavesthewholecountry.Thefirstfilmtellsthestoryofaviolentsoldier,LengFeng,whodoesnotobeytheordersofhissuperiorsandeventuallygrowsintoahero.Lengisaninsubordinatespecialforcessoldier,whoisexpelledfromthearmybecausehedisobeystheordersandshootsadruglordduringanassaultmission.ButhisextraordinarymarksmanshipandtoughpersonalitywinhimanopportunitytotherecruitmentintotheelitemilitarysquadronWolfWarriors.InhisfirstmilitarydrillasamemberoftheWolfWarriors,LengFengandhiscomradesarefacedwithaseriouschallengewhenatroopofforeignmercenariesstraddletheborderlineandturnthedrillintoanactualcombat.Inthefinalsceneofthefilm,Lengisbesiegedbytheotherside,nonetheless,hedefeatstheotherpartyandgainsjusticethroughhisstrongpowerandkeenjudgment.InWolfWarriors2,ittellsthestoryofaformerChinesespecialforcessoldierLengFengandhisadventurousjourneytorescuehislocalfriendsandcompatriotsinawar-tornregionofAfricaoccupiedbyinsurgentsandmercenaries.Lengcouldhavebeensafelyevacuated,butheresolutelyreturnstotheenemy-occupiedarea.Asthefightproceeds,heeventuallybreaksintothewarzoneandfightsforfellowcitizens.SynopsisofAvengersTherearefourAvengersseriesoffilmssofar.Theseriesmainlytellthestoryoftheheroes’teamcalledAvengers.Superheroesassembleandexerttheirmagicalpowers.Finally,theydefeattheevilforcesandensurethesafetyoftheearth.Thefollowingsaretheplots:ThefirstfilmofAvengerstellsthatS.H.I.E.L.D.commander,NickFury,activelysearchesforthestrongestheroesinordertofightagainstthevillain,Loki.FuryunitesIronMan,CaptainAmerica,Thor,Hulk,BlackWidowandHawkeye.SixsuperheroesgathertoformtheAvengersalliancetofighttogetheragainstLoki.ThesecondfilmAvengers:AgeofUltrontellsastoryaboutanerrorthatIronMantriestostartadormantpeacekeepingplan.TonyStark,whounloadsthesteelarmor,inventsUltron,anartificialintelligencerobotwhichtakestheresponsibilitytoprotecttheworld.WhenUltronreachestheconclusionthathumanbeingsarethegreatestthreatontheearth,itbeginstoimplementplanstoeliminatehumanbeings.Superheroes,then,shouldertheresponsibilityandunitetopreventUltronfrommakingaterroristicplan.ThethirdfilmAvengers:InfinityWartalksaboutthestoryoftheAvengersandtheirallieswhosacrificeeverythingtopreventThanos,thesupremelordinthegalaxy,fromdestroyinghalfofthelifeinuniverse.Intheend,Thanosaccomplisheshisgoalandturnshalfofthelifeinuniverseintodust.ThemovieAvengers:EndgameisthelatestfilmoftheAvengersseriessofar.Ittellsthestorythatafterthedevastatingevent,theavengersreunitewiththehelpoftheremainingheroes,theymustendthechaostotheuniverse.IntheoverallmainlineplotandderivedcluesoftheAvengersseries,theyallcontainthemeaningof“rescue”.Thesesuperheroesunitetopreventthecrisiswhichwoulddestroytheearthandtheyalwayssavehumanityintheend.TheCreationofHeroicImagesintheFil
