Thepowertomoveacarcomesfromburningfuelinanengine.Pollutionfromcarscomesfromby-productsofthiscombustion(燃燒)process(exhaust)andfromtheevaporation(蒸發(fā))ofthefuelitself.
Gasolineanddieselfuelsaremixturesofhydrocarbons(碳?xì)浠衔?,compoundswhichcontainhydrogenandcarbonatoms.Ina"perfect"engine,oxygenintheairwouldconvertallthehydrogeninthefueltowaterandallthecarboninthefueltocarbondioxide.Nitrogen(氮)intheairwouldremainunaffected.Inreality,thecombustionprocesscannotbe"perfect",andautomotiveenginesemitseveraltypesofpollutants.
TypicalEngineCombustion:
FUEL+AIR=>UNBURNEDHYDROCARBONS+NITROGENOXIDES+CARBONMONOXIDE+CARBONDIOXIDE+WATER
HYDROCARBONS
Hydrocarbonemissionsareproducedwhenfuelmolecules(分子)intheenginedonotburnorburnonlypartially.Hydrocarbonsreactinthepresenceofnitrogenoxidesandsunlighttoformground-levelozone(臭氧),amajorcomponentofsmog.Ozoneirritatestheeyes,damagesthelungs,andaggravatesrespiratoryproblem.Anumberofexhausthydrocarbonsarealsotoxic,withthepotentialtocausecancer.
NITROGENOXIDES(NOx)

CARBONMONOXIDE
Carbonmonoxide(CO)isaproductofincompletecombustionandoccurswhencarboninthefuelispartiallyoxidized(氧化)ratherthanfullyoxidizedtocarbondioxide(CO2).Carbonmonoxidereducestheflowofoxygeninthebloodstreamandisparticularlydangeroustopeoplewithheartdisease.
CARBONDIOXIDE
Inrecentyears,theU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)hasstartedtoviewcarbondioxide,aproductof"perfect"combustion,asapollutionconcern.Carbondioxidedoesnotdirectlyimpairhumanhealth,butitisa"greenhousegas"thattrapstheearth'sheatandcontributestothepotentialforglobalwarming.
