I.BEFORETHECONTESTBEGINS:

A.Registration

Allteamsmustberegisteredbefore2PMESTonThursday,February10,2011.Werecommendthatallteamscompletetheregistrationprocesswellinadvance,sincetheregistrationsystemwillnotacceptanynewteamregistrationsafterthedeadline.COMAPwillnotacceptlateregistrationsforMCM/ICM2011underanycircumstances.NOEXCEPTIONSWILLBEMADE.

a. Ifyouareregisteringyourfirstteamforthisyear’scontest,clickonRegisterfor2011Contestontheleft-handsideofthescreen.

Enteralltherequiredinformation,includingyouremailaddressandcontactinformation.

IMPORTANT:Besuretouseavalidandcurrentemailaddresssothatwecanuseittocontactyouatanypointbefore,during,andafterthecontest,ifnecessary.

b. Ifyouhavealreadyregisteredateamforthisyear’scontestandwanttoregisterasecondteam,clickonAdvisorLogin,thenloginwiththesameemailaddressandpasswordthatyouusedwhenyouregisteredyourfirstteam.Onceyou’reloggedin,clickonRegisterAnotherTeamneartheupperrightcornerofthepage,thenfollowtheinstructionsthere.

Note:Anadvisormayregisternomorethantwo(2)teams.Ifyoualreadyregisteredtwoteams,theRegisterAnotherTeamlinkwillnotappear.Thesystemwillnotallowyoutoregistermorethantwoteams.

c. Althougheachadvisorcanregisteronlytwoteams,thereisnorestrictiononthenumberofadvisorsorteamsthatcanregisterfromanyparticularinstitutionordepartment.

RegistrationFee

A$100registrationfeeperteamisrequired.

Foranadditional$100feeperteam,youcanreceiveaJudgesCommentarywrittenspecificallyaboutyourteam’spaper.

WeacceptpaymentwithMastercardorVisaonlyviaoursecurewebsite.Wecannotacceptotherformsofpayment.Oursecuresitewillprocessyourcreditcardpayment,soyourcreditcardnumberisprotected.Oursystemwillnotstoreyourcreditcardnumberafteritprocessesyourpayment.

Afterwereceiveapprovalfromyourfinancialinstitution(thistakesonlyafewseconds),thesystemwillissueacontrolnumberforyourteam.Yourteamisnotofficiallyregistereduntilyouhavereceivedateamcontrolnumber.Printthepagethatdisplaysyourteamcontrolnumber:Itisyouronlyconfirmationthatyourteamhasbeenregistered.Thispagealsoliststheemailaddressandpasswordthatyouenteredwhenregistering;youwillneedthisinformationtocompletethecontestprocedures.

YouwillNOTreceiveanemailconfirmationofyourregistration.

Ifyouneedtochangeanyoftheinformation(name,address,contactinformation,etc.)thatyouspecifiedwhenyouregistered,youcandosoatanypointbeforeorduringthecontestbyloggingintothecontestwebsitewiththesameemailaddressandpasswordthatyouusedwhenregistering(clickontheAdvisorLoginlinkontheleftsideofthescreen).Onceloggedin,clickontheEditAdvisororInstitutionDatalinkneartheupperrightcornerofthepage.

Youwillreturntothecontestwebsiteduringthecontesttoenterandconfirminformationaboutyourteam,andtoprintoutyourteam’sControlSheetandSummarySheets,whichyouwillusewhenpreparingyourteam’ssolutionpacket.Detailsonthesestepsfollowintheinstructionsbelow.

Eachstudentmayparticipateononlyoneteam.

Teammembersmustbeenrolledinschoolatthetimeofthecontest,buttheyneednotbefull-timestudents.Teammembersmustbeenrolledatthesameschoolastheadvisorandotherteammembers.

Teammembersmaynotseekhelpfromordiscusstheproblemwiththeiradvisororanyoneelse,exceptothermembersofthesameteam.Inputinanyformfromanyoneotherthanstudentteammembersisstrictlyforbidden.Thisincludesemail,telephonecontact,andpersonalconversation,communicationviawebchatorotherquestion-answersystems,oranyotherformofcommunication.

Partialsolutionsareacceptable.Thereisnopassingorfailingcut-offscore,andnumericalscoreswillnotbeassigned.TheMCM/ICMcontestjudgesareprimarilyinterestedintheteam’sapproachandmethods.

SummarySheet:ThesummaryisanessentialpartofyourMCM/ICMpaper.Thejudgesplaceconsiderableweightonthesummary,andwinningpapersareoftendistinguishedfromotherpapersbasedonthequalityofthesummary.

Towriteagoodsummary,imaginethatareaderwillchoosewhethertoreadthebodyofthepaperbasedonyoursummary:Yourconcisepresentationinthesummaryshouldinspireareadertolearnaboutthedetailsofyourwork.Thus,asummaryshouldclearlydescribeyourapproachtotheproblemand,mostprominently,yourmostimportantconclusions.Summariesthataremererestatementsofthecontestproblem,orareacut-and-pasteboilerplatefromtheIntroductionaregenerallyconsideredtobeweak.
