TheAncientGreekphilosopherPythagorasisbestknowntodayforhismathematicaltheorem,whichhauntsthedreamsofmanygeometrystudents,butforcenturieshewasalsocelebratedasthefatherofvegetarianism.Ameatlessdietwasreferredtoasa"Pythagoreandiet"foryears,upuntilthemodemvegetarianmovementbeganinthemid-1800s.

WhilePythagoraswasanearlyproponentofameatlessdiet,humanshavebeenvegetarianssincewellbeforerecordedhistory.Mostanthropologistsagreethatearlyhumanswouldhaveeatenapredominantlyplant-baseddiet;afterall,plantscan’trunaway.Additionally,ourdigestivesystemsresemblethoseofherbivorescloserthancamivorousanimals.Prehistoricmanatemeat,ofcourse,butplantsformedthebasisofhisdiet.
