addition,asthelakesinthevalleyretreated,exposedsandwasblownbythewinds,resultingindunes.

Theparkwasoriginallylabelledaprotectedareabackin1932,byPresidentHoover;afterfearsofgoldminingorconcretemanufacturingalarmedresidentsofthenearby

AlamosaandMonteVistacities,whothenpetitionedCongressaskingforprotection.Theareawaseventuallyupgradedfromanationalmonumenttoanationalparkand

preservein2004.
