1.PartsofSpeech
InEnglishgrammar,thereareeightpartsofspeech:nouns,pronouns,verbs,adjectives,adverbs,prepositions,conjunctions,andinterjections.Eachpartofspeechhasaspecificroleinasentence.
Nounsarewordsthatrepresentpeople,places,things,orideas.Theycanbeclassifiedintocommonnounsandpropernouns.
Example:dog,city,Mary
Pronounsarewordsthatreplacenounsinasentencetoavoidrepetition.
Example:he,she,it,they
Verbsareactionwordsthatshowwhatthesubjectisdoingorbeing.
Example:run,jump,is,are
Adjectivesdescribeormodifynounsandpronouns,providingmoreinformationaboutthem.
Example:beautiful,tall,happy
Adverbsmodifyverbs,adjectives,orotheradverbs,indicatingmanner,time,place,ordegree.
Example:quickly,very,soon
Prepositionsshowtherelationshipbetweenanounorpronounandanotherwordinthesentence.
Example:in,on,at,under
Conjunctionsconnectwords,phrases,orclausesinasentence.
Example:and,but,or,because
Interjectionsexpressstrongemotionsorfeelingsandareoftenfollowedbyanexclamationmark.
Example:wow,oh,oops
2.SentenceStructure
InEnglish,asentenceismadeupofasubject,apredicate,andsometimesanobject.Thesubjectisthepersonorthingthatperformstheaction,thepredicateistheactionorstateofbeing,andtheobjectisthereceiveroftheaction.
Example:
Subject:Tom
Predicate:isplaying
Object:soccer
3.Tenses
Englishverbshavedifferenttensestoindicatethetimeofanactionorevent.Thethreemaintensesarepresent,past,andfuture.
Presenttense:usedtodescribeactionshappeningnoworgeneralfacts.
Example:Shewalkstoschooleveryday.
Pasttense:usedtodescribeactionsthathavealreadyhappened.
Example:Theyplayedbasketballyesterday.
Futuretense:usedtodescribeactionsthatwillhappeninthefuture.
Example:Wewillgototheparktomorrow.
4.Plurals
InEnglish,nounscanbesingularorplural.Toformthepluralofmostnouns,weadd"-s"or"-es"totheendoftheword.
Example:
Singular:cat,box
Plural:cats,boxes
5.Articles
Articlesarewordsthatcomebeforenounstoindicatewhetherthenounsarespecificorgeneral.TherearethreearticlesinEnglish:"a,""an,"and"the."
-"A"and"an"areindefinitearticlesusedbeforesingularnounstoindicateanon-specificitem.
Example:Sheboughtabook.
-"The"isadefinitearticleusedbeforesingularorpluralnounstoindicateaspecificitem.
Example:Thebookonthetableismine.
6.Homophones
Homophonesarewordsthatsoundthesamebuthavedifferentmeaningsandspellings.Itisessentialtounderstandtheirdistinctionstoavoidconfusioninwritingandspeaking.
Example:
-Two(thenumber)vs.too(also)
-Here(inthisplace)vs.hear(tolisten)
7.Idioms
Idiomsarephrasesorexpressionsthathaveafigurativemeaningdifferentfromtheliteralinterpretation.TheyaddcoloranddepthtotheEnglishlanguagebutcanbechallengingfornon-nativespeakerstounderstand.
