Tocometotheseconclusions,theteamduga0.6-0.9meterdeepcolumnintotheground,takingsamplesof

soilfromdifferentheightsalongthecolumn.Backinthelab,sampleswerecarbon-datedtodeterminetheirage

andthensortedunderamicroscopetolookformicroscopicmineralparticles,knownasphytoliths(植硅體).

Phytolithsareessentialevidenceofplants—theyremainedinthesoilthousandsofyearsaftertheplantdied.So

researcherscanusethemtotellwhichplantshavegrowninanareainthepast.

Over5,000years'worthofsamples,nospecieslosswasdetected.Thesefindingssuggestthatcontraryto

commonbelief,theAmazonisnotuntouchedbyhumans,butratherhasbeenprotectedbythemforthousandsof

years.Themanagementoftherainforestbynativepeoplesappearstohavebeenvitalinpreservingitsbiodiversity
