Beyondtheanecdotes,expertspointtoastreamofdata—muchofitfrom
studentsthemselves-thatindicatescheatingisrampant.AreportlastJuneby
RutgersUniversityprofessorDonaldMcCabeforTheCenterforAcademic
Integrityshowed70percentofstudentsat60collegesadmittingtosome
cheatingwithinthepreviousyear;oneinfouradmittedtoengaginginserious
cheating(copyingfromanotherstudent,usingconcealednotes,orhelping
someoneelsecheat).McCabe'shighschoolfindingsweresimilarlygrim:Of
18,000highschoolstudentssurveyedacrossthecountryoverthepastfour

educationcosts,somestudentshesitatetoapplyforthetest.Anotherfactoris
thepressurefromtheincreasinglycompetitivejobmarket.Manystudents
usedtobelievethatthemoreeducationtheyreceived,thebetterjob
opportunitiestheywouldhave.Withtheexpandedenrollmentforboth
undergraduatesandpost-graduates,jobhuntbecomesmoreandmoredifficult.
Manystudentsfearthatwhentheyfinishtheirpost-graduatestudies,the
positionswillhavebeenalreadyoccupied.Moreover,manycompaniesprefer

CanthegraduateprogramofferwhatIwanttolearn?Ourfinaldecision
shouldbebasedonourpersonalsituations.
4.ENTHUSIASMFORSPORTSModernsportsarebecomingmore
spectator-orientedthanparticipantoriented.Justthinkofmillionsand
millionsofpeoplewhospendcountlesshoursbeforeTVsetswatchingsports
ofallsorts:OlympicGamesWorldSeriesGamesandtheWorldCupSoccer
Games.Accordingtoasurveysportshavethegreatestnumberofviewers
(78%)amongvarioustelevisedevents.Whenanimportantfootballmatchis
televisedlivethestreetsofabigcityareoftenleftdeserted.Evenifitmakes
spectatorsdog-tiredthenextdaytheycannottearthemselvesawayfromthe
screen.Theyareeagertoknowforsurethefinalscores."Truethescoreswill
beavailableinthemorningpaper"saysafootballfan"butthat'snotthesame
thing:what'sgoingonhere!"Apassionforsportstakespossessionof
thousandsofpeoplewhogotostadiumswatchgamesonTVorlistento
broadcasts.Oneoftheprimarycausesperhapsisthatsportscanprovide
alternativeoutletsforemotionsandalternativesourcesofsatisfaction.
Modernscienceandtechnologyhasreducedmostofworkandlifetoaroutine.
Thereisnovarietynorchallengenorrisk.Everythingispredictableand
controllable.Amongtheactivitiesthroughwhichpeopleseekreleasefrom
theircolorlessexistenceorpent-upemotionssportsofferthepurestformof
escapeandhealthiestoutlet.Sportscanobliterateawarenessofeveryday
realitydischargethetensionsofadayatworksatisfythestarvedneedforfree
fantasyandaggressiveurgeandliftonetoamomentofintenseexcitement
andexhilaration.Enthusiasmforsportsalsoreflectsthepublic"feeling."For
mostpeopleitrepresentsacommonbackgroundasharedinterest.Ithasa
bindingpowerthattranscendssocialclassesandpoliticalviews.Strangers
maysharenothinginthewayofreligioneducationandpoliticsbuttheshared
interestinsportsisstrongenoughforthemtogetalongandevenbecome
friends.Sportsgivepeopletheopportunitytobecomeapartofacommunity.
Justbecauseofthenatureofsportitselfandofhumanbeingssportscan
alwaysinciteinthemapassionateenthusiasm.ENTHUSIASMFORSPORTS
