Beyondtheanecdotes,expertspointtoastreamofdata—muchofitfrom
studentsthemselves-thatindicatescheatingisrampant.AreportlastJuneby
RutgersUniversityprofessorDonaldMcCabeforTheCenterforAcademic
Integrityshowed70percentofstudentsat60collegesadmittingtosome
cheatingwithinthepreviousyear;oneinfouradmittedtoengaginginserious
cheating(copyingfromanotherstudent,usingconcealednotes,orhelping

situations.Post-graduateCrazeCoolsOffThepost-graduatecrazehaslong
sincebeenahotissueonmostcampusesaroundthecountry.Accordingtothe
statisticsreleasedbyShanghaiEducationalTestInstitute,79,299studentsin
Shanghaisatinforthepost-graduateentranceexamsin2003,adramaticrise
of32.6%overthepreviousyear.Theyearof2003isthetenthyearsincethe
numberofpost-graduatetesttakersbegantogrowrapidlyandsteadily.
However,sincethen,therisinglinehasgraduallyplateauedyearbyyear,with
amodestriseof6.7%,1.8%,2.1%respectivelyin2004,2005,2006.In2007,
thenumberoftesttakersevendroppedby6.5%incomparisonwith2006.All
thesestatisticspointtoaninterestingphenomenon—thepost-graduatetest,
afteraten-yearcraze,isstartingtocooloff.Threemajorfactorsaccountfor
thecoolingoffofthepost-graduatecraze.Oneisthepost-graduateeducation
reform.Post-graduatestudentsusedtoenjoyamodestgovernmentsubsidy
fortheirthree-yearstudies.Butaccordingtothenewgraduateprogram,they
havetopayforalltheirlivingandlearningexpenses.Facedwiththerising
educationcosts,somestudentshesitatetoapplyforthetest.Anotherfactoris
thepressurefromtheincreasinglycompetitivejobmarket.Manystudents
usedtobelievethatthemoreeducationtheyreceived,thebetterjob
opportunitiestheywouldhave.Withtheexpandedenrollmentforboth
