publishedin1962,SilentSpring.SilentSpringisoneofafewbooksthathave

changedhistory.

SilentSpringisaboutchemicals,specificallyaboutonetypeofchemical

chlorinatedhydrocarbons—andmorespecificallyaboutonefamousmember

ofthatgroup,DDT.Manypeoplewhohavegrownupsincethe1960shave

notheardofDDT,butbeforeSilentSpring,andforanumberofyearsafter

ward,DDTanditsrelativeswereimportanttoolsinthecivilizedworld'sat

tempttocontrolnaturethroughtheuseoftechnologyandchemicals.DDTis

apowerfulinsecticideandwasusedthroughouttheworldtokillinsectpests

Usingcarefullycollectedscientificevidence,theauthorshowedthatDDTand

similarpesticideshadatleasttwodangeroussideeffects.Oneofthesewas

thetendencyofpesticidestokillalloftheinsectsinthelocationwherethey

wereused.Notallinsectsareharmful,however.Manybees,forexample,

perform,necessaryfunctions,suchaspollinatingplantsandevencontrolling

thenumbersofother,moreharmful,insects.Whenusefulinsectsare

eliminated,theresulthasoftenbeengreaterproblemsthanbeforethe

pesticidewasused.Asecondproblemwithchlorinatedhydrocarbonsisthat

theydonotdisappearquickly;theyarestablechemicalsthataccumulatein

thebodiesofinsectsandthebirdsandanimalsthateatthemandcontinueto

affectedbyDDT-typepesticides.Manybirdseatinsectsandwormsasfood,

disappearanceofmanykindsofbirdswasduetothepresenceofpesticidesin
