Madagascar,toidentifyanyanimalsthatmighthaveclaimedtheroleofbaobab-seedspread.Theresearchersalso

setupcameratrapsaroundseed-containingfruitslyingontheground,andsearchedanyfaeces（糞便）thatthey

encounteredalongthewayforthepresenceofseeds.

TheyreportinthejournalBiotropicathatanativerodent（嚙齒動物）knownasthewesternbunch-tailedrat

wascaughtoncamerahandlingwholefruitsonfouroccasions.Althoughtherewasnofootageoftheratbreaking

thefruitsopen,theteamdidchanceupon13fruitsthathadbeenchewedintoandhadtheirseedsremoved.Though

thebitemarkswerenotclearenoughtoidentifyaninitiator,thiswasclearevidencethataseed-distributinganimal

wasoutthere.Theythenfoundtheecologicalequivalentofasmokinggun:baobabseedsinsevendifferentpilesof

bush-pigfaces.

Whilethefindingisimportantinitsownright,italsoprovidesvaluableevidencethatintroducedspeciesmay

notbeentirelyharmful.Madagascar9spigs,forexample,thoughnotnative,havemadethemselvesessentialtothe

survivaloftrulynativespecies.SimilarrelationshipsaresuspectedtoholdinSouthAmericabetweenrabbitsnative

toEuropeandplantswithnoseeddistributors.ForDrAndriantsaralaza,thatsuggeststhefullecologicalroleof

introducedspeciesshouldbeconsideredbeforetalkofextinctionbegins.
