The scientists say their method may help reduce the methane released by cows, one of the main producers of the gas. When talking about global warming, many people think of carbon dioxide, another heat-trapping gas. Methane is an even more powerful heat-trapping gas. Cows are known to produce high levels of methane when they eat and process food.Researchers at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico are studying how a cows diet affects the production of methane. The researchers are using a specially designed machine to measure the effect. The scientists use the machine to try to capture the animals breathing to examine the methane released. Most of the gas is released when cows belch. The digestive bacteria in a cows stomach causes the animal to send out the gas through its mouth. There are an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows in the world. Each animal releases as much as 120 kilograms of methane per year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that, whenever measured in pounds, the effect of methane on climate change is more than 25 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. As it is difficult to capture the gas released by cows for use as energy, one way to lessen its release is to change their diet. Scientists in some countries are looking for ways to decrease cow methane. But while they are trying different plants and chemical compounds, those products would be too costly and difficult to bring to Mexico.24.How harmful is the gas sent off by cows?A. It is more difficult to control its amount.B. It takes up most of human-caused methane.C. It is the key factor to prevent globe warming.D. It is more harmful than carbon dioxide.25.How is the harmful gas produced by cows?A. When they digest food in their stomachs.B. When their gas meets with air.C. When their gas is being sent out.D. When they breathe in air through mouths.26.What can scientists in some countries do to settle the problem caused by cows?A. Limit the number of cows.B. Change what they eat.C. Fix machines on their mouths.D. Use their gases as energy.27.What may be the best title for the text?A. We Had a Better Method of Raising CowsB. Cows Are Much More Harmful than CarsC. Researchers Found a Way to Reduce Methane from cowsD. Two Gases Are Causing the Warming of the PlanetCMany people have excuses for not learning a foreign language. One of the common ones is that they dont have a gift for language learning. The excuse that one has no talent for learning a certain skill is a tragedy in itself, and this common excuse has possibly discouraged millions of people from accomplishing great things. Many experts and scholars, such as K. Ander Ericsson, one of the worlds leading theoretical(理論的) and experimental researchers, have proposed the theory that skill is mostly a matter of large amounts of deliberate practice. Books such as The Talent Code have helped popularize it. While I do not personally believe that we all learn at the same pace or that we are all born the same, I certainly believe that we can all achieve amazing results beyond our imagination, simply through motivation and hard work. To be specific, anything can be learned, unless of course, you start with the belief that you are not talented. The truth is that if you think you are not talented in languages, it probably has something to do with your track record in language classes at school. This isnt surprising because the curriculum of language classes is made so that it teaches languages in one way, whereas we all learn differently. It might be good at this point to mention that doing interesting stuff does significantly help with the acquisition(獲得) of a foreign language. For most of us, this excludes(排除) grammar and drills to a large extent. In my interview with polyglotspeaking or using many languagesand author Susanna Zaraysky, Susanna said that her teacher in high school once told her that she should probably look for another subject to focus her efforts on instead of languages. Susanna now speaks nine languages, has written a book entitled Language is Music , and has traveled to exciting places all over the world. Benny Lewis, probably one of the best known language learners and bloggers on the Internet, has a strikingly similar story, and he now speaks over 12 languages. Not “talented”, eh? 28. What is the excuse for language learning mentioned in the text? A. I cannot learn languages well. B. I have no genius for learning language. C. Im not fond of learning languages. D. I dont consider foreign languages vital. 29. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. The book named The Talent Code. B. A great deal of purposeful practice. C. The idea that a new language is a new skill. D. The theory that practice helps one gain a skill. 30. Which of the following statements might the author probably agree with? A. Language classes arent suitable for everyone. B. Schools usually try to make language classes interesting. C. Grammar and drills are the least important in language learning. D. The talent for languages makes you interested in learning them.31. How does the author explain his idea in the last paragraph? A. By telling stories. B. By explaining facts.C. By giving examples. D. By making comparison.DIt is National Sleep Awareness Week and reflecting on the importance of this basic act is timely. As a preventive cardiologist(心臟病醫(yī)生), I work with patients who want to improve their health and lengthen their lives. Many of them have major risk factors for heart disease; others already have heart disease or have experienced a heart attack.Traditionally, patients who want to improve their heart health have received four main suggestions from their doctors: eat a healthy diet, get more exercise, quit smoking, and enjoy proper amounts of alcohol. Plenty of research backs up these four pieces of advice: Large studies have found that making improvements in these four areas lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 67 percent. But lately, researchers are starting to recognize that there should be five recommendations on that list, not just four. They are discovering that getting enough sleep is a powerful health protector as well. When researchers include enough sleep in their studies as a fifth cardio-preventive behavior change, they find that it lowers the chance of dying of heart disease even more: adding a good seven hours of sleep a night in addition to making positive changes in diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol intake lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 83 percent. When that news started coming out, doctors began tagging sleep onto their list of recommended health behavior changes. But I dont think sleep belongs at the bottom of the list. I think it should be at the top! I believe that getting enough sleep-at least seven to eight hours per night for most people- is the most important health behavior change you can make to improve the health of your heart and your overall health.Sure, Id prefer that everyone make all of the big five lifestyle changes, but if I could only choose one, Id pick sleep because when you are well- rested, you have more power to make the right choices about what you eat and drink, and you have more energy to exercise and you have the resilience you need to kick bad habits such as smoking and overeating. But when youre exhausted, everything in life is more difficult.32.What does plenty of research show about the 4 common suggestions?A. They are the best ways found so far.B. They are not as helpful as expected.C. They help improve peoples health.D. They should be considered.33.What does the latest research show?A. Seven hours sleep is most important to the heart.B. Various factors lead to good heart health.C. The chance of dying of heart disease has dropped.D. Enough sleep contributes to good heart health.34.What was the doctors reaction to the news on sleep?A. They discussed it publicly.B. They thought it made sense.C. They tried to ignore it.D. They totally changed their mind.35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A. Why different factors need to work together.B. Why the author makes sleep his No. 1 suggestion.C. What the importance of a healthy lifestyle is.D. What prevents people from living healthily.第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。Cities at SeaPeople are building a new kind of city.
