Although the personal computer seems to have infiltrated almost every aspect of our daily lives, some people still like to do things the old-fashioned way, including Chicago librarian Margaret Keer. All the librarians, frequenily, hourly, more than hourly, we nee

7、d them, she said. They are quick; theyre easy and vital. We couldnt do without them. One of the questions Ive been asked is if you could only have five or 10 source books to answer all the questions that you might be asked, what would you pick? World Book is always in the top five. Ms. Keers colleag

8、ue Ruth Lednicer, is charged with promoting high tech advances in the Chicago Public Libraries, including research on the Internet. But when it comes to encyclopedias, she still prefers the original. The great thing is it also fosters great appreciation for the world that exists in books, said Ms. L

9、ednicer. What other imagination would you can tap into a whole other world of imagination? Its great for kids to get them reading, to get them appreciating the tactile sense of picking up books. Thats why Chris Witting, a father of two from Morton Grove, Illinois, purchased a set of the Encyclopedia

10、 Britannica for his children. I had an encyclopedia when I was a kid so 1 figured this is something that my children should have, he said. It was expensive but I did make the investment. The kids were excited when they got the encyclopedias. They came in a big box with a build-it-yourself bookcase.

11、But what was most interesting was that, and this was in 1996, it came with a CD, and I said to them, see this little CD, everything thats in those books is on this little disk, and they thought that was amazing. They pretty much just used the disk. I mean those books got dust on them, he said. They

12、look good in the bookcase but hardly ever got opened. They would occasionally ask me a question and I would say why dont you look at the encyclopedia over there? but they would go to the computer and use the CD-ROM instead. The Witting children are not alone. Many young people, like 17-year-old high

13、 school senior Megan Mullen, prefer the power of computer technology, whether CD-ROMS or the Internet, to the printed words in a heavy set of books. Mike, a 6th grader from Chicago, says his ticket to finding information is at his local branch library, but not in a book. On the Internet because you

14、have a wider selection, he said. Or 1 might just look up in a book, but I dont usually use an encyclopedia. Using the Internet as a first choice does not worry Paul Kobasa, World Books general managing editor. We dont see the Internet as a threat its an opportunity, he said. There are things we can

15、present to our readers on line that were unable to do in print. And were more than happy to take advantage of that medium, on-line or CD. Its a continuation of the tradition that started when World Book was first printed. Then it was the story of the world in pictures and text, now its the story of

16、the world in media and text. But Mr. Kobasa says there is still a market for the printed version. The move to electronic media is just the latest format change in the way encyclopedias deliver information. Its unlikely to be the last. 2. Then he pat pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks like the

48、s, some of which are described below. This writing is not about predictions of where medicine might go in the future, but rather about possibilities. Some of the techniques and inventions presented are just around the comer from reality; others are years away. Some will become common practice in our

49、 lifetime; some will be beneficial not to us, but to our grandchildren. Its impossible to say fight now what the next big breakthrough will be. However, the fields that are receiving the most attention hem at the beginning of the twenty- first century include the following: telemedicine, robotic sur

50、gery home-based diagnostics tools, transplants and gene therapy. Telemedicine: Seeing the Doctor without Seeing the Doctor. In 1999, Dr. Jerri Nielsen went to the South Pole as part of a research team. She was prepared for the cold and the hardships of such an adventure; she was not prepared for can

51、cer. Dr. Nielsen was the only medical doctor in her group. Assoon as she found a lump in her breast, she knew she was in for trouble. Because of the winter weather conditions, she could not leave the Pole, nor could anyone fly in to help her. How could she even diagnose herself, no less treat her ow

52、n disease? The only possible way to save her life was through the use of telemedicine. Because she was able to communicate, via computer, with doctors thousands of miles away, Dr. Nielsen and her colleagues were able to save her life. Had this technology not existed, the doctor would surely have per

53、ished long before she could get out of that frozen land. Simply put, telemedicine is the use of telecommunications to provide medical, information and services. This technology enables doctors to communicate with specialists at long distances, as well as allowing patients to communicate with their d

54、octors. There are two basic types of technology that are currently being used in this field: 1. Store and Forward: This is when a digital image is stored at one location and then sent to another. This method is used in teleradiology, when X rays, CT scans, or MRT results are sent from one medical ce

55、nter to another or from a medical center to an individual doctor. Some radiologists even have the appropriate computer technology installed at home so that they can have images sent to them directly for diagnosis. This technology is also used in the field of telepathology, where images of pathologic

56、al slides are sent from one location to another for diagnosis (which is how Dr. Nielsens tumor was biopsied). 2. Two-way interactive television: This technology is used when a live consultation is necessary. Dr. Nielsen used this technology so that doctors could guide her through her cancer treatmen

57、t. You dont have to be at the South Pole to have need for this kind of technology. Its extremely useful for anyone in a rural area, far from an urban health center or specialist. There axe programs that currently use desktop videoconferencing systems. You can even attach peripheral devices, such as a stethoscope, to make examination and diagnosis easier.
