For decades, people have been telling each other,“You are what you eat.”However, it doesnt mean, for example, that if you eat a plant, you become a plant. At least, not for people. For a certain kind of sea slug (海蛞蝓, however, those words are more than just a reminder

、 to eat well. The Elysia chlorotica is a sea slug that looks like a leaf and eats by sucking the insides out of algae(海藻These algae, like plants, get their food by using sunlight to help make sugar. At a recent meeting of scientists, a biologist named Sidney K. Pierce reported a surprising observatio

、n in these algaeeating sea slugs. Pierce does his research at the University of South Florida in Tampa.Pierce already knew that these sea animals, just like plants, have the right chemical tools to turn sunlight into food. Surprisingly, now hes learned that sea slugs arent simply stealing what

、 they need to do this from algae. Theyve also stolen the recipe for how to make chlorophyll (葉綠素,a chemical that is vital to the process, and can make chlorophyll themselves. In other words, they have started to behave like their food.“This could be a fusion (融合 of a plant and an animalthats just co

、ol,”John Zardus told Science News. Zardus is an invertebrate zoologist at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Invertebrates are animals that dont have backbones ( like slugs, and zoology is the study of animals.Inside their cells, plants have tiny structures called chloroplasts (葉綠體These chloroplasts tur

、n carbon dioxide and water into sugar using sunlight and a chemical called chlorophyll, which is known as photosynthesis Like plants, algae that get eaten by sea slugs also use photosynthesis. When Pierces slug eats algae, it separates out chloroplasts. Instead of digesting and excreting (排泄

、chloroplasts, the sea slug absorbs them inside its own cells. Pierce and his colleagues already knew that once a sea slug has chloroplasts inside its cells, it can use photosynthesis to make food, which means it may not even have to eat for the rest of its life (about a yearBut the chloroplasts use

、up the chlorophyll during photosynthesis, and a fresh supply is needed. Where does it come from? One idea was that when an animal absorbed chloroplasts, they came with a lifetime supply of chlorophyll. But as it turns out, thats not the case with these sea slugs. They have stolen more than just chlor

、oplasts. 1When people say“You are what you eat”,it generally means that _.Athe nutrition in a persons diet affects his or her healthByoull finally become something if you eat somethingCall people must be responsible for their actions

、Dthe diet cures more than the doctor解析句意理解題。 A2We can infer from the text that John Zardus is a scientist who _.Agives suggestions on the recipeBobserves the evolution of the plant and animal lifeCstudies animals without backbonesDdoes res

、earch on the bones of animals解析推斷題。根據(jù)短文中的“Invertebrates are animals that dont have backbones(like slugs, and zoology is the study of animals.” C3Photosynthesis may be defined as the process of _.Aremoving oxygen and increasing carbon

、 dioxideBchloroplasts using chlorophyll to make sugarCdigesting and excreting chloroplastsDabsorbing water and sugar from the soil解析細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)短文中的“These chloroplasts turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar using sunlight and a chemical called chlorophyll.”

、to the finding of Pierce and his colleagues, sea slugs, unlike other animals,_.Acan store a lifetime supply of chlorophyllBnever have the function of photosynthesisCoften get eaten by plants like algaeDcan make their own chlorophyll解析細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)短文中第四段中的“and can make chlorophyll themselves. In other words,

、they have started to behave like their food”和倒數(shù)第二段最后的“it can use photosynthesis to make food”可知,海蛞蝓與其他動(dòng)物的區(qū)別是它們能自己制造葉綠素,并利用光合作用來(lái)為自己提供食物。

Dear Editor, I'm a senior high school student, named Li Hua. Now many students have iPods and think it' s a fashion to use them. Using an iPod, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read them on the sceen. Apparently, it' s helpful to our study, especiall

、y to our English listening. Some students, however, bring their iPods to classroom and listen to music with earphones, which makes the teacher and other students greatly annoyed. Some of them even waste precious time in class playing video games. In my opinion, as a student, we should make good use of iPods to help
