形，最高的石柱高達(dá)10米，它們的平均重量達(dá)26噸，這么重的家伙竟有不少是橫架在兩根豎直的石柱上的！Stonehenge這個名字的前一半Stone意為“石頭”，后一半在現(xiàn)代英語詞典中已查不到了，據(jù)考證它來自古代英語，意思是“高高懸掛著”。想來它在古代有一個形象的名字“高懸在天上的石頭”。巨石陣又稱索爾茲伯里石環(huán)、環(huán)狀列石、太陽神廟、史前石桌、斯通亨治石欄等名，是歐洲著名的史前時代文化神廟遺址，約建于公元前4000-2000年，屬新石器時代末期至青銅時代。這個巨大的石建筑群位于一個空曠的原野上，占地大約11公頃，主要是由許多整塊的藍(lán)砂巖組成，每塊約重50噸。巨石陣不僅在建筑學(xué)史上具有的重要地位，在天文學(xué)上也同樣有著重大的意義：它的主軸線、通往石柱的古道和夏至日早晨初升的太陽，在同一條線上；另外，其中還有兩塊石頭的連線指向冬至日落的方向。因此，人們猜測，這很可能是遠(yuǎn)古人類為觀測天象而建造的，可以算是天文臺最早的雛形了。
