Thewasteaccumulatedissoldtolocalrecyclingcompanies,who,thankstoJose’sefforts,payahigher-than-marketrateforeverythingbroughtinbythebankmembers.Themoneyreceivedisplacedinthepersonalaccountwheretheycollectuntilthesavingsgoalisreached.Theaccountholdercanthenwithdrawthemoney,orchoosetoleaveitandcontinuetogrowforabiggertarget.“Atthebeginning,myteachersthoughtIwascrazyorthatachildcouldnotundertakethistypeofproject,”Joserecalls.“Theydidnotunderstandthatwearenotthefutureofthecountrybutitspresent.Luckily,Ihadthesupportoftheschoolheadmasterandanassistantinmyclass.”
Theboy’seffortspaidoff,andby2013,thebankhadover200members,whobroughtinonetonofrecyclablewaste.Today,theeco-bank,whichnowhasthesupportofseverallocalinstitutions,boaststeneducationalcenters.Theyaredesignedtoteachtheover3,000students,aged10to18,tobecomefinanciallyindependent,usetheirmoneywisely,andhelptheenvironment.

Theresearchersbeganbyaskingtheownersoftwelvedogsofvariouskindstotraintheirpetstoidentifytwotoysofdifferentmaterials,suchasatoyanimalandaball.Oncethedogshadmasteredthetask,theytookturnsinsideaspecialscanner.Theownersthentestedtheirdog’slanguageskillbyfirstcallingoutthenamesofthetoystheyhadbeentrainedtorecognizeandthensayingmeaninglesswordssuchas“bobbu”and“bodmick”whileholdinguprandomobjectsthedogshadn’tseenbefore.
Thescanssuggestedthatthepartsofthedogs’brainsresponsibleforprocessingofsoundsshoweddifferentbrainpatternswhentheyheardwordstheywerefamiliarwith,comparedwiththeonestheyhadneverheardbefore.Whilethatwasnotenoughtoprovethatthedogswerepicturingtheirtoyswhentheyheardtheword,itdidindicatesomesortofrecognition.Theresearchersbelievethisisanimportantstepforwardinunderstandinghowdogsprocesslanguage.
Evenmoreinterestingwasthatthedog’sbrainsshowedahigherlevelofneural(神經(jīng))activityatthesoundofunknownwords.Thisistheexactoppositeofwhathappensinhumanbrains,whichgetmoreactiveatthesoundoffamiliarwords.Theresearcherssaythedogsmaybecomecheerfulatthesoundofnewwordstotrytounderstandtheminthehopeofdelightingtheirmasters.“Dogswanttopleasetheirowners,andperhapsalsoreceivepraiseorfood,”saysEmptyneuroscientistGregoryBurns,seniorauthorofthestudy.
