Yet,inspiteofthefactthatcoalhaslongbeenasourceofelectricityandmayremainoneformanyyearscoalrepresentsabout80percentofUnitedStatesfossil-fuelreserves,ithasactuallyneverbeenthemostdesirablefossilfuelforpowerplants.Coalcontainslessenergyperunitofweightthannaturalgasoroil;itisdifficulttotransport,anditisassociatedwithahostofenvironmentalissues,amongthemacidrain.Sincethelate1960sproblemsofemissioncontrolandwastedisposalhavesharplyreducedtheappealofcoal-firedpowerplants.Thecostofamelioratingtheseenvironmentalproblemsalongwiththerisingcostofbuildingafacilityaslargeandcomplexasacoal-firedpowerplant,havealsomadesuchplantslessattractivefromapurelyeconomicperspective.
