Oneoftheclaimsthatwasdoingbestwasheldbythreemenwhohadworkedinpartnershipforthelasttwoyears,andwhohadbeenamongthefirsttoarriveatCedarGulch.TheywereknownamongtheothersasEnglishBill,SimHowlett,andLimpingFrank.SimHowlettwasperhapstheleaderoftheparty.Hehadbeenoneoftheearliestgold-diggers,andwasasquare,powerfullybuiltman.Hewasamanoffewwords,butthewordswhenspokenwereforcible.Hewasbynomeansquarrelsome,butwasonewhomfewcaredtoquarrelwith,eveninaplacewhereseriousquarrelswereofconstantoccurrence,andwhererevolverscrackedsooftenthatthesoundofafrayexcitedbutlittleattention.

EnglishBillwasatallwiryman,hotoftemper,butageneralfavourite.Generouswithhismoney,alwaysreadytolendahelpinghandtoanyonewhowasdownonhisluck,healsowasacapitalworker,andhad,inspiteofhisroughclothesandtheuseoflanguageasroughasthatofhiscompanions,acertainairwhichtoldthat,likemanyothersinthediggings,hewasagentlemanbybirth.WhythesetwomenshouldhavetakenupwithLimpingFrankasacomradewasamatterofsurprisetothosewhoknewthem.Theywerebothmenintheprimeoflife,whilehewasatleasttenyearstheirsenior.Hishairwasalreadywhite;hisfacewasthatofastudentratherthanaminer,withagentleandalmostwomanlyexpression.Hisframewasslight,andlookedaltogetherincapableofhardwork,andhewalkedwithadistinctlimp,theresultofabulletwoundinthehip.Andyetthereweremeninthegulchwho,havingknownthetrioatotherdiggings,declaredthattheywouldratherquarreleitherwithEnglishBillorSimHowlettthanwithLimpingFrank,andassomeofthemweredesperatefellows,andnotedpistolshots,theirreportwasquitesufficienttosecurerespectforamanwhootherwisewouldhavebeenregardedwithpityorcontempt.

Verylittleofthehardworkofthepartnershipfellupon[13]Frank.Hecooked,lookedaftertheshanty,didwhatwashingandmendingtotheclotheswasnecessary,andoccasionallycamedownandassistedtoworkthecradleandsortthestuff.Theygenerallyaddressedhimasdoctor.Notthathemadeanyprofessionofmedicalknowledge;buthewasalwaysreadytogivehisservicesincaseofsickness,andmanyaminerhadhepulledthroughfeverswhich,haditnotbeenforhisnursingandcare,wouldhaveprovedfatal.
