Thoughtheslapstickanticsof"Madagascar's"quartetofanimalfriendsdonotbreakanynewground,thatdoesn'tstopthemfrombeingcontinuallyamusing.AsdirectedbyEricDarnellandTomMcGrath,thisfilmmakesthemostoftheunfetteredvisualimaginationitsanimatorsbringtothescreen.

"Madagascar"alsobenefitsfromnothavinganyheavymoraltoimpartorlifelessontoteach.Itsimplywantsyoutocrackasmile,andwiththeexpertvoicesofBenStiller,ChrisRock,DavidSchwimmerandJadaPinkettSmithithasnotroublemanagingthat.

Insomeways"Madagascar"isaspiritualdescendantofanotherkindofanimatedcartoon,clayanimationwizardNickPark's1990Oscar-winning"CreatureComforts,"whichhadzooanimalstalkingfeelinglyabouttheirlotinlife.Thisfilmalsobeginsinazoo,albeitonedistinctlyoutoftheordinary.

ThatwouldbeNewYork'sCentralParkestablishment,whichthefilmconceivesasakindofluxuryspathatcaterstoitsinhabitants'everywhim,fromheatlampsandblowdryerstogourmetmeals.Afteryearsofthiskindofpampering,it'snotsurprisingtheanimalshavelostwhateversurvivalskillstheyoncehad.

Fouramigosarethefocusofourattentioninthisurbanenclave.AlextheLion(Stiller)isthezoo'sMr.Showbiz,aself-centeredperformerwhosebestfriendisthemoreintrospectiveMartytheZebra(Rock).MelmantheGiraffe(Schwimmer)isacertifiedhypochondriacwhomakesjokesabouthishealthplan,andGloriatheHippo(PinkettSmith)isaneasygoingtypewhodoesn'thesitatetothrowherweightaroundwhenit'snecessary.

Ofthequartet,onlyMartyisrestless.Hehatestobeinterruptedwhenhedreamsofwide-openspaces("Whenthezebra'sinthezone,leavehimalone")andwondersifitwouldbepossibletogettoaplacehe'sonlyheardabout:"thewild."

AsquintessentialNewYorkers,theanimalshaveacomicallytoughtimeadaptingtothewild,andtheyalsohavetodealwiththeisland'sotherinhabitants:atribeofwildandcrazylemurs,theoriginalpartyanimals.Headofthetribeistheself-importantKingJulienXIII,voicedbySachaBaronCohen.AnactorbestknownastheinimitableAliG,BaronCohennearlystealsthepicturewithhisunplaceablelemureseaccent.

ThoughthingsgetabitseriouswhenAlexthreatenstoturnnative,"Madagascar"keepsthingslooseandfunnythroughout.Therearevisualgags,musicaljokeskeyedtosongslike"Stayin'Alive"andthe"HawaiiFive-O"theme,andcleverlinesfromscreenwritersMarkBurton&BillyFrolickandEricDarnell&TomMcGrath.

Ifthisfilmdoeshaveamoral,it'sthatnooneshouldgiveupontheirfriends.Maybethat'snotsuchabadlessonafterall.
