FormanyyearsitwascommonintheUnitedStatestoassociateChineseAmericanswithrestaurantsandlaundries.PeopledidnotrealizethattheChinesehadbeendrivenintotheseoccupationsbytheprejudiceanddiscriminationthatfacedtheminthiscountry.

ThefirstChinesetoreachthemainlandUnitedStatescameduringtheCaliforniaGoldRushof1849.Likemostoftheotherpeoplethere,theyhadcometosearchforgold.Inthatlargelyunoccupiedland,themenstakedaclaimforthemselvesbyplacingmarkersintheground.However,eitherbecausetheChineseweresodifferentfromtheothersorbecausetheyworkedsopatientlythattheysometimessucceededinturningaseeminglyworthlessminingclaimintoaprofitableone,theybecamethescapegoatsoftheirenviouscompetitors.Theywereharassedinmanyways.Oftentheywerepreventedfromworkingtheirclaims;somelocalitiesevenpassedregulationsforbiddingthemtoownclaims.TheChinesethereforestartedtoseekoutotherwaysofearningaliving.Someofthembegantodothelaundryforthewhiteminers;otherssetupsmallrestaurants.(TherewerealmostnowomeninCaliforniainthosedays,andtheChinesefilledarealneedbydoingthis"woman'swork".)Somewenttoworkasfarmhandsorasfishermen.

Intheearly1860'smanymoreChinesearrivedinCalifornia.Thistimethemenwereimportedasworkcrewstoconstructthefirsttranscontinentalrailroad.Theyweresorelyneededbecausetheworkwassostrenuousanddangerous,anditwascarriedoninsucharemotepartofthecountrythattherailroadcompanycouldnotfindotherlaborersforthejob.Asinthecaseoftheirpredecessors,theseChinesewerealmostallmales;andlikethem,too,theyencounteredagreatdealofprejudice.Thehostilitygrewespeciallystrongaftertherailroadprojectwascomplete,andtheimportedlaborersreturnedtoCalitbrnia--thousandsofthem,alloutofwork.Becausethereweresomanymoreofthemthistime,theseChinesedrewevenmoreattentionthantheearliergroupdid.Theyweresoverydifferentineveryrespect:intheirphysicalappearance,includingalong"pigtail"atthebackoftheirotherwiseshavedheads;inthestrange,non-Westernclothestheywore;intheirspeech(fewhadlearnedEnglishsincetheyplannedtogobacktoChina);andintheirreligion.Theywerecontemptuouslycalled"heathenChinese"becausethereweremanysacredimagesintheirhousesofworship.
