Researchersareincreasinglyinterestedinmanipulatingtheenvironmentearlyinchildren'sliveswhentheyareperceivedtobeatriskforimpoverishedintelligence.InaprogramconductedinNorthCarolinabyCraigRameyandhisassociates,pregnantwomenwithIQsaveraging80wererecruitedforastudy.Aftertheirbabieswereborn,halfoftheinfantswerecaredforduringthedayataneducationalday-carecenterandhalfwererearedathomebytheirmothers.Bothgroupsofchildrenweregivenmedicalcareanddietarysupplements,andtheirfamiliesweregivensocialservicesiftheyrequestedthem.

Attheageof3,thechildrenwhoattendedtheeducationalday-carecenterhadsignificantlyhigherIQsthandidthehome-rearedchildren.ThisdifferencewaslikelyduetothedeclineintheIQsofthehome-rearedchildrenduringtheperiodfrom12to18monthsofage.Bythetimethechildrenwere5yearsold,39percentofthehome-rearedchildrenhadIQsbelow85butonly11percentoftheeducationalday-carechildrenhadIQsthislow.Inthemostrecentevaluationofthisproject,positiveeffectsofeducationalday-careontheintellectualdevelopmentandacademicachievementofthechildrenwereevidentatage12.

Someparents,suchasthoseinRamey'sstudy,havedifficultyprovidinganadequateenvironmentfortheintellectualneedsoftheirinfants.Oncethesedifficultiesarearecurringpartofthefamilysystem,changingeffortsprobablywillbemoredifficultandcostly.Earlyinterventioninthefamilysystemisdirectedatchangingparentaladaptiveandresponsivefunctioningsothatpermanentnegativeeffectsareminimized.

Inanotherinvestigation,theInfantHealthandDevelopmentProgram,earlyinterventionWithlowbirthweightchildrenrevealedthatbothhomevisitation(探望)andaneducationalchildcurriculumimprovedtheChildren'sIQs,blems,andimprovedthehomeenvironment.Theinterventionwasmoreeffectivewithmotherswithloweducationalattainmentthanthosewithhigheducationalattainment,moreeffectiveforAfrican,AmericanthanWhitechildren,andeffectiveformostat-riskchildren.

Interventionprogramshavethemostpositiveeffectsonchildren'swell-beingwhenthey(a)beginasearlyaspossible,(b)provideservicestoparentsaswellastothechildren,(c)havealowchild-teacherratio,(d)havehighparentalinvolvement,and(e)havefrequentcontacts.Inonereviewoffamilyinterventionstudies,interventionwasmoreeffectivewhentherewereelevenormorecontactsbetweentheintervenerandthefamily.Whileelevensessionsisasome-whatarbitrarynumber,itdoesindicatethatacertaindurationofcontactisnecessaryforinterventionsuccess.
