Butresearchhasshownthatcomplaining,whendoneright,canalsohaveitspsychologicaladvantages.“Complainingallowsustoachievedesiredoutcomessuchassympathyandattention,”saysRobinKowalski,apsychologyprofessoratClemsonUniversity.“Thetruthis,everybodydoesit.”Arecentstudy,publishedbyKowalskiandhercolleaguesintheJournalofSocialPsychology,examinedrelationshipsbetweenmindfulness(focusingone’sattentiononthepresentmoment),happiness,andexpressionsofannoyance.
