“Becauseproblem-solvingisnotthepurposeoftheexchange,”Bernewrites.“Itspurposeistoallowthesubjecttogainsympathyfromothersinhisinadequacytomeetthesituation.”There’sevenanameforthistypeofpersoninpsychologycircles:the“help-rejectingcomplainers.”
Butresearchhasshownthatcomplaining,whendoneright,canalsohaveitspsychologicaladvantages.“Complainingallowsustoachievedesiredoutcomessuchassympathyandattention,”saysRobinKowalski,apsychologyprofessoratClemsonUniversity.“Thetruthis,everybodydoesit.”Arecentstudy,publishedbyKowalskiandhercolleaguesintheJournalofSocialPsychology,examinedrelationshipsbetweenmindfulness(focusingone’sattentiononthepresentmoment),happiness,andexpressionsofannoyance.
Thestudyparticipants,410maleandfemalecollegestudents,listedthepetpeevestheyhadwithacurrentorformerrelationshippartner.Theyalsocompletedaquestionnairetomeasuretheirhappiness,positiveandnegativeaffect,depression,mindfulness,relationshipsatisfaction,andoveralllifesatisfaction.Thosewhocomplainedwiththehopeofachievingacertainresult,thestudyfound,tendedtobehappierthanthosewhosimplydidsoforitsownsake.
