BeforeIgetstarted,IwanttomentionthatthisisthelastbaccalaureateatleastinhispresentroleforyourDean,MarvinChun,beforehereturnstothefaculty.AndI’mwonderingifwecouldallshowhimjustalittlebitofgratitudeforhisservicetheselastfiveyears.He’snotgoingfaraway.開始之前,我想提一下,今天是你們的院長馬文·千在任上參加的最后一次畢業(yè)典禮。讓我們對他過去五年的工作表示感謝。將來他不會離我們很遠(yuǎn)。

Ourexcitementtodayistemperedbyglobalturbulence.Wecanseetheperilsofconflictandcrisisaroundtheworld.Andyet,asIlookoutontothiscourtyard,Icanalsoseethepromiseofthosewellpreparedtobetterourcollectivefuture.OldCampusisfilledanewwiththeboundlesspotentialofgraduateswhooffercauseforhope.當(dāng)我們在這里慶賀之時,我們知道世界各地正發(fā)生著沖突與危機(jī),這些全球動蕩使我們不能盡興。然而,當(dāng)我望向眼前的你們,我同時也看到了希望,人類集體的未來將經(jīng)由整裝待發(fā)的你們得到改善。在這片老校區(qū)的廣場上,充滿無限潛力的畢業(yè)生們將賦予未來希望。

ButIwouldlikeyou,graduatingseniorsfromYaleCollege,todepartfromthisplacewithasomewhatdifferentmindset.Iamgoingtourgeyoutorecognizethatyourexcellenteducationallowsyoutolistentootherscarefully,considerwhattheyhavetosay,andsometimescometoanewpointofview.Iamsuggestingtoday–adayfilledwiththeprideofaccomplishment–torecognize,atthesametime,thevalueofintellectualhumility.Today,Iwishtofocusonthecouragetoacknowledgeallwedonotknow,toadmitwhenwearewrong,andtochangeourminds.但是,我希望你們,耶魯本科學(xué)院即將畢業(yè)的學(xué)生,帶著某種不同的心態(tài)告別校園。我希望你們在這個充滿成就感的日子里認(rèn)識到,思想上的謙遜也無比重要。你們所受的優(yōu)秀教育使你們能夠認(rèn)真聽取他人的意見,思慮他人的言論,這有時會帶來新的觀點。所以今天,我的演講將聚焦在承認(rèn)未知的勇氣,承認(rèn)我們的錯誤和改變我們的想法。
Sixtyyearsago,PresidentJohnF.Kennedyspoketoacapacityaudienceseatedrightwhereyouarenow.Hesawasimilarstateofunrestasthespecterofwarloomed.AndIsuspecthegainedasimilarsenseofoptimismatopthisplatformfrommembersoftheClassof1962.PresidentKennedy’shistoricCommencementaddressatYalewassweepinginitsrhetoricanditsscope.Andmorethana-halfcenturylater,thereisstillmuchforustoheedfromhismessage,includingtheabidingbutnowespeciallyrelevantvalueofseekingnewperspectives.60年前,美國前總統(tǒng)約翰·F.肯尼迪對坐在你們現(xiàn)在位置上滿席的聽眾發(fā)表演講。在戰(zhàn)爭陰影的籠罩下,他看到的局勢與今天動蕩的局勢類似,而且我估計他在這個講臺上從1962屆的耶魯畢業(yè)生身上同樣看到了希望。肯尼迪總統(tǒng)在這場具有歷史意義的耶魯畢業(yè)典禮演講中,以其風(fēng)采和內(nèi)容贏得了廣泛的影響。對于半個多世紀(jì)后的我們,仍然可以從他的演講中得到很多啟發(fā),尤其是我們今天要談到的尋求新視角的價值。

Now,whenIwasagraduatestudenthere,ProfessorIrvingJanis,asocialpsychologist,wasoneofmyteachers.HeformulatedtheconceptofgroupthinkandlinkedthesuppressionofdissenttoaseriesofforeignpolicydebaclessuchastheescalationoftheVietnamWarandtheBayofPigsinvasion.我在耶魯讀研究生的時候,社會心理學(xué)家艾爾芬?詹尼斯教授是我的一位老師。他提出了“群體思維”的理論,并將這種對不同意見的壓制與當(dāng)時美國一系列外交政策的失敗聯(lián)系起來,如越南戰(zhàn)爭的升級和豬灣入侵。
TheBayofPigsinvasion–adecisionbyKennedytohavetheCIAleadagroupofarmedCubanexilesinafailedattempttooverthrowFidelCastro–wasdescribedbyKennedyaideArthurSchlesingerasrootedina“curiousatmosphereofassumedconsensus,[inwhich]notonespokeagainstit.”AndasPresidentKennedyhimselfdisclosedtoTIMEmagazine,“therewere50orsoofus,presumablythemostexperiencedandsmartestpeoplewecouldget,toplansuchanoperation.Mostofusthoughtitwouldwork…Iwasn’tawareofanygreatopposition.”Yet“whenwesawthewiderangeoffailures,”Kennedycontinued,“weaskedourselves:whyhaditnotbeenapparenttosomebodyfromthestart?Iguessyougetwalledofffromrealitywhenyouwantsomethingtosucceedtoomuch.”TheinvasionwasanembarrassmenttotheUnitedStates,andinthoseColdWardays,itpushedCubaclosertotheSovietUnion.豬灣入侵是時任美國總統(tǒng)的肯尼迪決定由中央情報局領(lǐng)導(dǎo)一群武裝的古巴流亡者在古巴西南海岸豬灣,向菲德爾·卡斯特羅領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的古巴革命政府發(fā)動的一次失敗的入侵。事后,作為總統(tǒng)顧問的阿瑟·施萊辛格描述這次決策為根植于一種“奇怪的假定共識氛圍,(其中)沒有人反對?!闭缈夏岬媳救讼颉稌r代》雜志透露的那樣:“我們有50人左右,大概是我們能找到的最有經(jīng)驗和最聰明的人,來計劃這樣一次行動。我們中的大多數(shù)人都認(rèn)為它會成功......我沒聽見強(qiáng)烈的反對聲音。然而,當(dāng)我們一敗涂地的時候,我們責(zé)問自己,為什么事情沒有在一開始得到明顯的阻止。我想,當(dāng)你太希望某件事情成功時,你就會與現(xiàn)實隔絕?!边@場入侵對于美國來說很難堪,在冷戰(zhàn)時期它把古巴推得與蘇聯(lián)更近了。
InthemanyyearssincePresidentKennedyspokeatYale,silosinwhichuncheckedopinioncanfindrefugehavebecomebothubiquitousandmoreeasilyaccessed;theyactasechochambersthatreaffirmbeliefsinreal-time.Withinthesesilos,speculationtravelsgreatdistanceswithoutscrutiny.Andthespiritofdiscordbetweenthesesilosdiscouragesthehonestexchangeofideasacrossthem.Inshort,clingingtoourcirclesofconsensushasgrownmorecomforting–andquestioningthem,moredifficult.然而自肯尼迪總統(tǒng)在耶魯大學(xué)發(fā)表演講后的許多年里,我們看見的卻是,隔閡讓未經(jīng)證實的觀點得到庇護(hù),而且它們已經(jīng)變得無處不在且更容易產(chǎn)生。它們就像回聲室一樣,實時地對這些觀點進(jìn)行重申和加固。在這些隔閡之中,無根據(jù)的推測不脛而走,不和諧的氛圍讓真誠的思想交流舉步維艱。簡而言之,加強(qiáng)我們已有的共識愈來愈成為一個“舒適圈”,而質(zhì)疑它們則變得難上加難。
Iencourageyoutorejectthatcomfort,becauseawillingnesstoexplorenewideasiswhatmakesallthedifference.Youknowthisperfectlywell,Irealize.ThediversityofacademicexperiencesavailablehereatYaleensuredthatyouwerenotlimitedtolearningfromthosewhoalreadysharedyouroutlook.Indeed,PresidentKennedychosetospeakofsuchmattersatYale“becauseoftheself-evidenttruththatagreatuniversityisalwaysenlistedagainstthespreadofillusionandonthesideofreality.”我想向你們呼吁,拒絕接受這種安逸,因為愿意探索新的想法才會讓事情變得不同。我想你們對此一定深有體會。耶魯大學(xué)在學(xué)術(shù)上的多樣性確保了你們不局限于從那些已經(jīng)與你們觀點相同的人身上學(xué)習(xí)。實際上,肯尼迪總統(tǒng)選擇在耶魯大學(xué)談?wù)撨@些問題,“是因為一個不言而喻的事實——一所偉大的大學(xué)總是會選擇站在傳播謬誤的對立面,而和真相站在一邊”。
Anothersocialpsychologist,MarkLeary,whorecentlyretiredfromthefacultyofDukeUniversity,closelyexaminedtheintellectualhumilityIseektonurtureinhighereducationgenerallyandinyoutoday.Hisreviewofthisattribute–arecognitionthat“one’sbeliefsandopinionsmightbeincorrect”–revealsthatitisassociatedwithgratitude,altruism,empathy,andmoresatisfyingrelationships.Intellectually-humblepeoplearemorelikelytobeforgivenbyothersfortheirmistakes.我一直以來試圖在高等教育中和今天的你們身上培養(yǎng)思想上的謙遜。一位最近從杜克大學(xué)退休的社會心理學(xué)家馬克·利里對此進(jìn)行過深入的研究。他重新審視了“承認(rèn)一個人的觀念和觀點可能是錯誤的”這種心理,結(jié)果發(fā)現(xiàn)它與感恩、利他主義、同情心和更令人滿意的關(guān)系有關(guān)。此外,思想上謙遜的人更有可能因其錯誤而得到他人的諒解。
Asextremism,polarization,andgridlockplagueourpoliticsatatimewhenpressingchallengescallonustoharnessoursharedhumanity,ProfessorLearydetailsequallysubstantialadvantagesofintellectualhumilityforsociety,including“l(fā)oweracrimonythatisbasedondifferencesinbeliefsandideology…[and]greaternegotiationandcompromise.”當(dāng)全球緊迫的挑戰(zhàn)需要我們心懷人類福祉,極端主義、兩極分化以及由此產(chǎn)生的僵局困擾著世界政治。在這種情況下,利里教授對于思想謙遜的研究,對社會有著實質(zhì)上的啟示,包括“減少基于信仰和意識形態(tài)差異的爭吵……(以及)增加談判和妥協(xié)”。
Now,whenwefirstmetfouryearsagoinWoolseyHall,IdescribedaseriesofobligationsthatwouldaccompanyyourYaleeducation,includingtheresponsibilitytobeconstantlycurious–andtolistencarefullytoothers.Atthat2018OpeningAssembly,Iencouragedmembersofthisclasstorememberthat“youhavecometoYalebecauseyoudon’tknoweverything–notyet.”四年前我與你們在耶魯伍爾西音樂廳第一次見面時,我告訴過你們一系列責(zé)任將伴隨著你們的耶魯教育,包括持續(xù)保持好奇心和仔細(xì)聆聽他人的意見。在2018年的開學(xué)典禮上,我鼓勵2022屆的成員們銘記,“你們來到耶魯是因為你們還有需要探索的未知領(lǐng)域”。
Now,evenasyoupreparetodepartYalefouryearslater,Iwillagaindeclarethatyouracquisitionofknowledgeisunfinished.You’llleaveYaledespitenotknowingeverything.Thetransformativepowerofliberaleducationliesnotinapromisetoteachyoueverythingbutinthepreparednesstomeetpresumptions–includingthoseweharborourselves–withahealthymeasureofdoubt.Itliesnotintheabilitytoanswerbutintheaudacitytoquestion.現(xiàn)在,在四年后的今天你們完成了學(xué)業(yè),我還想說的是你們獲取的知識仍不完整。但盡管你們并非無所不知,你們終將離開耶魯。通識教育的力量不在于承諾教給你們一切,而在于讓你們準(zhǔn)備好以有益的懷疑態(tài)度來應(yīng)對各種假設(shè),包括我們對自身所處的假設(shè)。它不在于回答的能力,而在于敢于質(zhì)疑的能力。

PirkeiAvot,theEthicsofourFathers,Maimonidesurgesreadersto“acceptthetruthfromwhoeverspeaksit.”想到這些學(xué)術(shù)事業(yè)的成就時,我想起了偉大的中世紀(jì)哲學(xué)家摩西·本·邁蒙尼德的一句箴言。他在著作《原則書》的導(dǎo)言中敦促讀者“接受真理,無論它出自誰之口”。
Indeed,wisdomisrootedinthiswillingness–thisresponsibility–toentertainideasbroughttoyoubyothers.Tolistencarefully.Tothinkcritically.Tochallengeyourviews–andthentochangethemwhenthediscoveryoftruthdemandsit.AsJusticeSonyaSotomayorsaidrecently,“Itis,Ifear,tooeasyforpeopletofailtolistenwhenwhatthey’rehearingisdifferentthanwhattheythink.”
事實上,智慧植根于接受他人帶給你的想法的意愿,或者說是責(zé)任。仔細(xì)聆聽,批判性地思考,挑戰(zhàn)自己的觀點,然后為了發(fā)現(xiàn)真理而去改變。正如美國最高法院法官索尼婭·索托馬約爾最近所說:“我擔(dān)心,當(dāng)人們聽到的與他們所想的不同時,他們很容易聽不進(jìn)去了。”
Asweknow,engagingwiththosewhoholdprofoundlydifferentperspectivesthreatensnottobetrayourbeliefs,buttobroadenthem.Listeningtothatwithwhichwemaydisagreeisanactnotofconciliation,butoffidelitytotruth.Andadmittingwhatwegotwrongisnosignoffailure,butanecessarysteptowardknowledge.與那些持有不同視角的人互動交流,并不會讓我們背棄自己的信仰,反而會擴(kuò)大它。傾聽我們可能不認(rèn)同的觀點,并不是一種妥協(xié),而是對真理的忠誠。承認(rèn)我們的錯誤并不是失敗的標(biāo)志,而是走向博學(xué)的必要過程。
