1950s,

the

Egyptian

governmentwanted

to

buildanewdamacrosstheNileinorder

to

control

floods,

produce

electricity,

and

supply

water

to

more

farmers

in

temples

and

destroy

culturalrelicsthatwereanimportantpartof

Egypt’sculturalheritage.

After

listening

to

the

scientists

who

had

studied

theproblem,andcitizenswholivednearthedam,

the

government

turned

to

the

UnitedNations

for

help

in

1959.

AcommitteewasestablishedtolimitdamagetotheEgyptian

buildings

and

prevent

the

loss

ofcultural

relics.

Thegroupaskedforcontributionsfromdifferentdepartments

and

raised

funds

within

the

international

community.

Expertsinvestigatedtheissue,conductedseveraltests,andthen

made

aproposal

for

how

the

building

could

be

saved.

Finally,

adocumentwassigned,andtheworkbeganin1960.

Theprojectbroughttogethergovernmentsandenvironmentalistsfrom

around

theworld.

Temples

and

other

culturalsitesweretakendownpiecebypiece,andthen

moved

andput

back

together

again

in

a

place

where

they

were

safe

fromthewater.In

1961,Germanengineersmovedthefirsttemple.

Over

the

next

20

years,

thousands

ofengineers

andworkersrescued22templesandcountlesscultural

relics.Fifty

countries

donated

nearly

$80

million

to

the

project.Whentheprojectendedin

1980,itwasconsidereda

great

success.

Not

only

had

the

countries

found

a

path

to

thefuturethatdidnotrunovertherelics

of

the

past,

but

they

had

also

learnt

that

it

was

possible

for

countries

to
