Gradeinflation—thegradualincreaseinaverage

GPAs(grade-pointaverages)overthepastfewdecades一isoften

consideredaproductofaconsumererainhighereducation,inwhich

force'-apolicyoftenburieddeepincoursecatalogscalled“grade

Gradeforgivenessallowsstudentstoretakeacourseinwhich

theyreceivedalowgrade,andthemostrecentgradeorthehighest

gradeistheonlyonethatcountsincalculatingastudent'soverall

GPA.

Theuseofthislittle-knownpracticehasacceleratedinrecent

years,ascollegescontinuetodotheirutmosttokeepstudentsin

recentlydepictedonpopularsci-fiTVseriessuchas“Westworld”

and“Humans”.

Justhowpeoplethinkisstillfartoocomplextobeunderstood,

letalonereproduced,saysDavidEagleman,aStanfordUniversity

neuroscientist."Wearejustinasituationwheretherearenogood

theoriesexplainingwhatconsciousnesssactuallyisandhowyou

couldeverbuildamachinetogetthere.”

Butthatdoesn'tmeancrucialethicalissuesinvolvingAI

aren'tathand.Thecominguseofautonomousvehicles,forexample,

posesthornyethicalquestions.Humandriverssometimesmustmake
