thinnessasournewmarkofvirtue.Theresultisthat
beingfatorevenonlysomewhatoverweight
isbadbecauseitimpliesalackofmoralstrength.
Ourobsession(癡迷)withthinnessisalsofuelled
byhealthconcerns.Itistruethatinthiscountrywe
havemoreoverweightpeoplethaneverbefore,and
thatinmanycases,beingoverweightcorrelateswith
anincreasedriskofheartandbloodvesseldisease.
Thesediseases,however,mayhaveasmuchtodowith
ourwayoflifeandourhigh-fatdietsaswithexcess

digestivesystemmaybemoreofadietaryproblemtoo
muchfatandalackoffiberhanaweightproblem.
Therealconcern,then,isnotthatweweightoo
much,butthatweneitherexerciseenoughnoreatwell.
