Theworldisgrapplingwithsubstantialeconomic,socialandenvironmental

challengesinthefaceofescalatingrisksanduncertainties.Inanincreasingly

interconnectedworld,shocksandcrises

areoccurringwithgreaterfrequencyand

intensity.RecenteventssuchastheCovid-19pandemic,conflictsandclimate-related

disastershavesignificantlyhinderedprogressineradicatingpovertyandhunger,reducinginequalityandgendergaps,andenhancinghealthandeducationoutcomes.1

SustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).

Themobileindustryhasachieved58%ofitspotentialcontributiontotheSDGs–upfrom31%in2015

Themobileindustrymakesasignificantcontributiontodrivingsustainable

developmentandachievingtheSDGs.

In2023,theaverageSDGmobileimpact

scoreacrossthe17goalswas58.3This

meansthemobileindustryachieved58%

ofitspotentialcontributiontotheSDGs–

upfrom31%in2015.Themobileindustry

achieveditshighestimpactonSDG9:

Industry,InnovationandInfrastructure,

drivenbythereachofmobile.Bytheend

of2023,theshareoftheworld’spopulationlivinginareaswithoutmobilebroadband

coveragestoodatjust4%(350million

people),while57%oftheworld’spopulation(4.6billionpeople)wasusingmobileinternet.

Growingusageofmobile-enabledactivitiesisalsopivotaltothemobileindustry’sSDG

contribution.Forexample,3billionpeople

(54%ofmobilesubscribers)usedmobile

financialservices(suchasmobilebanking

andmobilemoney)in2023.Thisdrives

mobile’simpactonmultipleSDGs,includingSDG1:NoPovertyandSDG8:DecentWorkandEconomicGrowth,byhelpingindividualstomanagetheirfinanceswhilecreating

employmentopportunitiesandraising

productivity.Yet,despitethesignificant

impactofthemobiletechnologyonthe

SDGs,thereisstillmoreworktobedonetomaximisetheindustry’scontributionaheadofthe2030deadline.

3ForeachSDG,theGSMAcalculatesa‘mobileimpactscore’outof100.Ascoreofzeromeansthemobileindustryishavingnoimpactatall,whileascoreof100meanstheindustryisdoingeverythingpossibletocontributetothatSDG.AmoredetaileddescriptionisprovidedintheSDGImpactMethodologydocument.

TheUNSummitoftheFutureisauniqueopportunitytoenhancecooperation

oncriticalchallengesandaccelerateprogressontheSDGs

On22September2024,theUNSummitoftheFuturewillconveneworldleadersto

forgeanewinternationalconsensusonhowtodeliverabetterpresentandsafeguard

thefuture.Digitalconnectivitywillbecentraltodiscussionsduringtheevent.TheUN’s

CommonAgendaproposesaGlobalDigitalCompacttobeagreedattheSummitoftheFuture.4Thiscompactoutlinesthreecriticalareasrequiringurgentmulti-stakeholder

digitalcooperation:closingthedigitaldivide;makingtheonlinespaceopenandsafefor

everyone;andgoverningAIforhumanity.

Themobileindustryplaysacrucialrolein

eachofthesethreeareas.First,addressingtheusagegapisintegraltoclosingthe

digitaldivideandensuringnooneisleft

behindinthedigitalage.5Mostunconnected

personsliveinareaswithmobilebroadbandcoverage,butfacebarrierstoadoption

includingaffordability(particularlyof

internet-enabledhandsets),knowledge,skillsandrelevance.Operatorsandtheirpartnershaveimplementedseveral

initiativestotacklethesechallenges.

Theseincludeofferingfinancingoptions

tomakesmartphonesmoreaccessibleforawiderrangeofconsumers,promoting

digitalskillsandeducation,andintroducingrelevantcontentandonlineservices.

Inaddition,mobileoperatorsplayan

importantroleinprovidingasafeandsecuremobileexperiencefortheirconsumerswhilemeetingtheirobligationstoprotectpublicsafety.Theirworkincludesaddressingissuesofprivacyandsecurity,aswellaspromoting

associatedwithAI,withoperators

collaboratingwithadiverserangeof

stakeholderstodevelopethicalguidelinesandpromoteresponsibleAIpractice.

RaisingawarenessandprovidingeducationaboutAIpracticesandsafetyisalsoacriticalaspectofmaximisingthepotentialofAI
