ehoklrrrnoetdglsrsdez–eyai–eyhn–rs–tu–ysoa–asee–ls–rn–eysu–eyyr–rss–hsn–hns–sy–yyia–otn–ig–EdiorialneinnrIn2021,naturalgasmarketswerecharacterizedbypersistentsupplyconstraintsandfastrecoveringdemand,whichputstrongupwardpressureonLNGpricesandhighlightedtheinterdependenceandvulnerabilityofenergysupplychains.TheloomingpricevolatilityhasbeenexacerbatedinFebruary2022bytheRussia-Ukraineconflict,andthecurrentEuropeanenergycrisisprovestobeastarkreminderofLNGsvitalroleinensuringenergysecurityandeconomicstabilit.Governmentsandpublicinstitu-tionsarebecomingincreasinglyinvolvedintheLNGbusiness,andwewillmonitortheconsequencesofthisparadigmshiftoverthecourseofthecomingDuring2021,LNGimportsreturnedtorobustgrowth,reaching372.3M,a4.5%increaseover2020.AsiaremainedthemaindemandcenterforLNG,growingby7.1%.StrongeconomicrecoveryinChina,risingnaturalgasdemandforpowergenerationinSouthKorea,lowerthanexpectedpipelinegassuppliestoEuropeandreducedavailabilityofhydropowerinBrazilcontributedtothesignificantincreaseinglobalLNGdemand.ChinaovertookJapanastheworldstopLNGimportingcountr,recordinga15%annualgrowth.Onthesupplyside,theUnitedStatesadded22.3MTofnewvolumestothemarket,recordinga49.8%riseinexportsandbecomingEuropeslea-dingLNGsupplie.With68newvesselsdeliveredduringtheyea,theLNGshippingfleetreached700vessels,including48FSRUsand31LNGbunkeringvessels,represen-tinga9%increaseincargocapacit.Freightratesremainedverystrongthroughouttheyearandtheo-derbookatyearendwasremarkablyhigh,with196unitstobedeliveredby2025.

Globalregasificationcapacityroseby46MTAlastyea,reaching993MTA.Fournewlarge-scalete-minalswerebroughtinoperationinBrazil,Croatia,IndonesiaandKuwait.Fiveexpansionprogramswerecompleted,fourofwhichinChinaandoneinJapan.Croatiabecamethe44thLNGimportingmarket,whileatleast6newmarketscouldstartimportingin2022,inElSalvado,Ghana,HongKong,Philippines,Sene-galandVietnam.Inthemeantime,LNGproductionhasbeenstrug-glingtokeeppacewithdemand,whichsentspotLNGpricesupwards.While7.4MTAofnewca-pacitycameonstream,5MTAofwhichintheUnitedStates,globalLNGexportswereaffectedbyunscheduledmaintenanceandshortfallsinfeedgas.IncreasedoutputfromtheUS,Egypt,MalaysiaandRussiawaspartlyoffsetbylowerexportsfromAngo-la,Indonesia,Nigeria,Norwa,Peruandrinidad.In2021,onlytwoFIDsweretaken,theNorthFieldEastexpansionprojectinQata,whichwilladd33MTAofliquefactioncapacityfrom2025,andPlutoLNGrain2inAustralia,for5MTA.By2025,morethan120MTAofnewliquefactioncapacityareplannedtoprogressivelycomeonline,whichshouldpartlyre-lievetensionsintheLNGmarket.Inanenvironmentmarkedbygeopoliticaltensions,risksofenergyshortagesandpricevolatilit,lastyearsawastrongreturnoflong-termcontracts.Asianbuyers,notablyChineseNOCsandindependentim-portersplayedaleadingroleinsecuringnewtermpurchasesfromtheUS,QatarandRussia.Inthefuture,themuch-neededsubstitutionofcoalandpollutingliquidfuelsaswellasthegeographi-calmismatchbetweennaturalgasproductionand

AmongLNGsupplyingcountries,AustraliaandQatararestillleadingthepack,with78.5MTand77MTrespectivel.Third,theUnitedStatessupplied67MTofLNGin2021andcouldbecometheworldsleadingLNGsupplierin2022.TheRussianFederationcamefourthwith29.6M,followedbyMalaysiawith25Australia,Qata,andtheUnitedStatesaccountedto-getherfor59.8%ofglobalLNGsuppl.ndemandgowtheceedsglobalLNGygowthAsiacontinuestobetheleadingimportingregionwitha73.2%shareofglobalLNGimports,upfrom71.4%in2020.AsianLNGimportsgrewby7.1%in2021,reaching272.5M.ImportsroseinallAsiancountriesexceptIndia,Japan,MalaysiaandSingapore.IndiaexperiencedthegreatestdecreaseinLNGimports(-2.6MTor-9.8%)duetothehighspotLNGpricesandtotheincreaseindomesticgasproduction,whichledIndiangasconsumerstoimportlessLNGthroughthefirstthreequartersoftheyea.Thishadano-tableimpactinspotimportswhichrecordedasteadydeclinefromMarch2021onwards.ChinaovertookJapanasfirstLNGimporterThecountryexperiencedtheworldshighestgrowthrateintermsofimportedvolumesi.e.+10.4MTor+15%,totaling79.3MTatyea-end.Recordweredrivenbytherobusteconomicrecoveryasasthegrowthingasforpowergenerationandcoalgasswitching.Inordertoavoidthesituationofter2020/2021,ChinesebuyersprocuredLNGofthewinterseasontocomplywithstoragementsandanticipatehighdemand.LNGimportsintoJapanremainedrelativelyrecordingaslightdeclineof0.1MTor-0.1%.Thedeclinecanbeexplainedbythecontinuationofrestrictionsthroughoutmostof2021,whichincludedrestrictionsoncommercialactivities,aswellasadecreaseingas-firedpowergenerationtothebenefitofnucleargeneration.IncreaseinChineseLNGofUSvolumesdeliveredtoAsia,32%to18%toAmericas,1%totheMiddleEast

ofglobalLNGimportedfromtheUS.
