ByEmilyBront?EmilyBront?EmilyBront?wasbornin1818,twoyearsafterCharlotteandayearandahalfbeforehersisterAnne,whoalsobecameanauthor.Herfatherworkedasachurchrector,andheraunt,whoraisedtheBront?childrenaftertheirmotherdied,wasdeeplyreligious.TheBront?slivedinHaworth,aYorkshirevillageinthemidstofthemoors.Thesewild,desolateexpanses—laterthesettingofWutheringHeights—madeuptheBront?s’dailyenvironment,andEmilylivedamongthemherentirelife.Shediedin1848,attheageofthirty.TheBront?s
TheBront?swereanineteenth-centuryliteraryfamilyassociatedwiththevillageofHaworthintheWestRidingofYorkshire,England.Thesisters,Charlotte(born21
April1816,inThorntonnearBradford),Emily(born30July1818inThornton),andAnne(born17January1820inThornton),arewellknownaspoetsandnovelists.Charlotte'sJaneEyrewasthefirsttoknowsuccess,whileEmily'sWutheringHeights,Anne'sTheTenantofWildfellHallandotherworkswerelatertobeacceptedasmasterpiecesofliterature.WutheringHeightsWutheringHeights,whichhaslongbeenoneofthemostpopularandhighlyregardednovelsinEnglishliterature,seemedtoholdlittlepromisewhenitwaspublishedin1847,sellingverypoorlyandreceivingonlyafewmixedreviews.Victorianreadersfoundthebookshockingandinappropriateinitsdepictionofpassionate,ungovernedloveandcruelty,andtheworkwasvirtuallyignored.
WutheringHeights
Today,WutheringHeightshasasecurepositioninthecanonofworldliterature,andEmilyBront?isreveredasoneofthefinestwriters—maleorfemale—ofthenineteenthcentury.LikeCharlotteBront?’sJaneEyre,WutheringHeightsisbasedpartlyontheGothictraditionofthelateeighteenthcentury,astyleofliteraturethatfeaturedsupernaturalencounters,crumblingruins,moonlessnights,andgrotesqueimagery,seekingtocreateeffectsofmysteryandfear.AsashatteringpresentationofthedoomedloveaffairbetweenthefiercelypassionateCatherineandHeathcliff,itremainsoneofthemosthauntinglovestoriesinallofliterature.PlotReviewInthelatewintermonthsof1801,amannamedLockwoodrentsamanorhousecalledThrushcrossGrangeintheisolatedmoorcountryofEngland.Here,hemeetshisdourlandlord,Heathcliff,awealthymanwholivesintheancientmanorofWutheringHeights,fourmilesawayfromtheGrange.Inthiswild,stormycountryside,Lockwoodaskshishousekeeper,NellyDean,totellhimthestoryofHeathcliffandthestrangedenizensofWutheringHeights.Nellyconsents,andLockwoodwritesdownhisrecollectionsofhertaleinhisdiary;thesewrittenrecollectionsformthemainpartofWutheringHeights.PlotReviewPutthefollowingsentencesintherightorderaccordingtotheplotfromchapter1to7.Mr.EarnshawsendsHindleyawaytocollege,keepingHeathcliffnearby.CatherineisbittenbyadogandisforcedtostayattheGrangetorecuperateforfiveweeks,duringwhichtimeMrs.Lintonworkstomakeheraproperyounglady.Threeyearslater,Mr.Earnshawdies,andHindleyinheritsWutheringHeights.Hereturnswithawife,Frances,andimmediatelyseeksrevengeonHeathcliff.Oneday,Mr.EarnshawgoestoLiverpoolandreturnshomewithanorphanboywhomhewillraisewithhisownchildren.Catherinequicklycomestolovehim,andthetwosoongrowinseparable,spendingtheirdaysplayingonthemoors.BythetimeCatherinereturns,shehasbecomeinfatuatedwithEdgar,andherrelationshipwithHeathcliffgrowsmorecomplicated.PointofViewPointofviewcanbedividedbythenarrator’srelationshipwiththecharacter,representedbythegrammaticalperson:thefirst-personnarrative,thethird-personnarrative,andomniscientnarrator.Inthefirst-personnarrative,thenarratorappearsinthenovelas“I”or“me”.Inthethird-personnarrative,thenarratordoesnotactuallyappearandallthecharactersarereferredtoas“he”or“they”.Ifthespeakerknowseverythingincludingtheactions,motivesandthoughtsofallthecharacters,thespekerisreferredtoasomniscientnarrator.PointofViewQuestion:WhatkindofpointofviewisadaptedinWutheringHeights?pointofview
