Ihavedemonstratedakeenmindsincemyearlychildhood.Foryears,Iconsistentlyoutperformedallofmyclassmatesinsuchchallengingsubjectsasmathematics,physicsandchemistry.Iwasthuschosentorepresenteithermyschoolormycityinavarietyofprovincialandnationalcontestsofacademicskills,inwhichIwonnumerousprizes.Thisimpressiveacademicrecordputmeonacademicaccelerationseveraltimes.Thatnotonlyenabledmetofinishmyprimaryandsecondaryeducationineightinsteadoftheusualtwelveyearsbutalsosentmeat14toaprivilegedclassforthegiftedattheChineseUniversityofScienceandTechnology,amajorcradleofthecountry’sscientificandtechnologicaltalents.

Aftertwoyearsofbasictraininginthegiftedclass,Ichoseelectricalengineeringasmymajorandcomputersoftwareprogrammingasmyminor,convincedthatexpertiseinthesefieldswouldstandmeingoodsteadinaneraofChina’srapideconomicexpansionandtechnologicalmodernization.Asyoucanseefromthetranscriptsofmyundergraduategrades,Iexcelledinbothoftheseareas.

Upongraduationin11011,IwoneasyacceptanceintotheInstituteofElectronicsundertheChineseAcademyofSciencesandbecameagraduatestudentat19,whenmostChinesestudentswouldbejuststartingtheiruniversityeducation.Atthisinstitute,Inarrowedmyacademicinterestdownandfocuseditontheareaofhumanandartificialintelligence,wherethecoursesItookweredeliberatelyconcentrated.Itseemedtomethatscientificbreakthroughswouldnextcomeinthisarea,whichmadeitbothchallengingandpromising.Ilearnedawholelotaboutthisareainthecourseifdoingmythesistitled“TheRadioShuntingSysteminRailroad”,forwhichsomeexperimentswereconductedonthebasisofartificialintelligence.

MysolideducationpaidoffinmyabilitytotakeonavarietyofresponsibilitiesinChina’sburgeoningsoftwareindustry.AfterIobtainedmyMaster’sDegreeinEngineeringin11014,Ifirsttookupajobwithatelecommunicationcompany,whereImanagedatrunkcommunicationsystemthatresembledthecellularwirelesssystem.Ayearlater,IjoinedasoftwarecompanytodevelopCMISprogramforChina’sPostandTelecommunicationsMinistry.Itwasalargeproject,andImadecrucialcontributiontoitbyindependentlydevelopingandfinalizingonesubsystem,whichprovedtobeasignificantsuccessandwonmeprofuseappreciationfromusers.Afterthecompletionofthatproject,IhavebeenworkingfortheJapanBrotherLheareaofsoftwaredevelopment.

Therelativesmoothpathofmycareernotwithstanding,Ihavenothadachancetoleadamajorproject,althoughIhavealwaysfinishedmypartofeveryprojectimmaculately.Inspiteofallmyachievements,IfeelthatIhavenottakenthefulladvantagesofmyintellectualcapabilities.InowwishtopursuestillmoreadvancedstudiesandtherebyobtainanadvanceddegreesothatIcanopenmoredoorsandshouldergreaterresponsibilities.

IbelieveIhaveacquiredthenecessarytheoreticalframeworkandsufficientpracticalexperienceforfurtherstudies.MyabilitytoteachmyselfandconductindependentresearchallowsmetoattaincompetencequicklyinareasthatImayatfirstknowverylittleabout.Ineverworkjusttofinishanassignment,butinsteadIalwaystryconscientiouslytoimprovemyknowledgeandexpertisethroughtheworkIdo.Inthisfashion,Ihavebecomeseasonedinsuchfieldsastrunkingsystem(telecommunications)andCMISsystem(software).ThisqualityshouldhelpmeasIseektofurtherupgrademyeducation,particularlyifIhavereadyaccesstotheseasonedguidanceofastrongfacultyandtheconvenienceofstate-of-the-artresearchfacilities.

TheUniversityofIdahoiswellknownforitsexcellenceintheE.Efield,completewithanaccomplishedfacultyandmodernresearchresources.Theseshouldsetagoodstageformetoexercisemykeenmentalpoweranddiligence.IfIamaccepted,IamconfidentthatIcanmakequickprogressintheE.Efield,especiallyintheareasofartificialintelligence,imageprocessing,wirelesscommunication,neuralnetworkandcomputernetworking,whichhavemanycharacteristicsincommonandsharemanyimportantprinciples.Duetothebroadapplicationsofthesetechnologies,Ibelievetheprogresswemakeintheseareaswillhelpshapethefutureofthemankind.Iwouldliketbeattheforefrontofsuchprogress.

AsIambroadlygroundedinEEandcomputerscience,youmayfindmequalifiedormorequalifiedforadvancedstudiesinareasotherthanthoseIhavementioned.Ifso,Iwouldgreatlyappreciateitifyoucouldletmeknowanysuggestionsthatyoumayhave.

IwishtoassureyouthatIhavethenecessaryEnglishlanguageskillstocompleteadvancedstudiesinyourPh.D.program.IgenerallyreadorwriteEnglishwithoutanydifficulty.Ihave,overtheyears,notonlyreadacademicorprofessionalmaterialsinEnglishavidlybutalsomemorizedthewholeEnglish-Chinesedictionary.TheremayberoomforimprovementinmyoralEnglishandEnglishlisteningcomprehension.ButIamsuremyEnglishproficiencyissufficientformetoundertakeadvancedstudiesandresearch.Besides,IbelieveIcanimprovemyoralEnglishbyleapsandboundsonceIstarttoliveinanEnglish-speakingenvironment.AllthatIneedtodoistosetmymindfree.
