athistrialin1964,nelsonmandelaclosedhisstatementfromthedocksaying,'ihavefoughtagainstwhitedomination,andihavefoughtagainstblackdomination.ihavecherishedtheidealofademocraticandfreesocietyinwhichallpersonslivetogetherinharmonyandwithequalopportunities.itisanidealwhichihopetoliveforandtoachieve.butifneedsbe,itisanidealforwhichiampreparedtodie.'

forty-fouramericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoath.thewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.yet,everysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms.atthesemoments,americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecausewethepeoplehaveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforbearers,andtruetoourfoundingdocuments.

andthen,finally,iwanttothankmarkandgaryforshowingmeoneofthebiggeststeelplantsinamerica.andtheytoldmethatfolksareproudtohavebeenmakingsteelrighthereforacentury--100years--righthere.(applause.)andtheyexplainedthat,today,thesteelyoumakeinclevelandissomeofthestrongestyou’llfindanywhereintheworld.it’soneofthemostproductiveplantsintheworld.bestworkersintheworld.(applause.)

andwhat’sremarkableis,whenyouthinkaboutit,gobacktowherethisplantwasjustafewyearsago.theeconomywasinfreefall,autoindustryonthebrinkofcollapse.andthatmeantdemandforsteelhaddriedup.theblastfurnaceswentquiet.about1,200steelworkerspunchedoutforwhatmighthavebeenthelasttime.andthatallcameattheendofadecadewhenthemiddleclasswasalreadyworkingharderandharderjusttogetby,andnearlyoneinthreeamericanmanufacturingjobshadvanished--alotofthemgoingoverseas.andthatcouldhavedevastatedthiscommunityforgood.

butwerolledupoursleeves,wemadesometoughchoices.werescuedandretooledtheamericanautoindustry;itsavedmorethanamillionjobs.webetonamericaningenuityandamericanworkers.(applause.)andassemblylinesstartedhummingagain,andautomakersstartedtomakecarsagain.andjustafewmonthsafterthisplantshutdown,yourplantmanagergotthecall:firethosefurnacesbackup,getthoseworkersbackonthejob.andoverthelastfouryears,you’vemadeyourselvesoneofthemostproductivesteelmillsnotjustinamerica,butintheworld.intheworld.(applause.)

soyouretooledtomakethestrongersteelthatgoesintonewer,betteramericancarsandtrucks.youcreatednewpartnershipswithschoolsandcommunitycollegestomakesurethatfolkswhoworkherehavethehigh-techskillstheyneedforthehigh-techjobs--becauseiwaslookingaroundthisfactory,andthere’sawholebunchofcomputerstuffgoingon.

oneofyourengineers--andiwanttomakesureigetmargaret’snamerighthere--margaretkrolikowski.didigetthatright,margaret?(applause.)where’smargaret?whereisshe?thereissheis,backthere.soi’mgoingtoquoteyou--i’mgoingtoquoteyou.here’swhatmargaretsaid:whenwecameback,wewantedtomakesurewewereinapositionwherewenevershutdownagain.nevershutdownagain.andthatmeansmakingsurethatworkershereareconstantlyupgradingtheirskillsandinvestmentsbeingmadeinthestate-of-the-arttechnology.

anditwasinteresting,wheniwasmeetinganumberofthefolkswhoweregivingmethetour--folkswhohavebeenhere30years,40years--butobviouslytheplanthaschanged,andsoduringthatperiodthey’vehadtoupgradetheirskills.andthat’swhat’shappened.andthestoryofthisplantisthestoryofamericaoverthelastfiveyears.wehaven’tjustbeenrecoveringfromacrisis.whatwe’vebeentryingtodoisrebuildanewfoundationforgrowthandprosperitytoprotectourselvesfromfuturecrises.andbecauseofthegritandresilienceandoptimismoftheamericanpeople,we’reseeingcomebackstorieslikeyoursallacrossamerica.

overthelast44months,ourbusinesseshavecreated7.8millionnewjobs.lastmonth,another200,000americanswentbacktowork.(applause.)andalotofthosejobsareinmanufacturing.sonowwe’vegotmoreworktodotogetthoseenginesoftheeconomychurningevenfaster.butbecausewe’vebeenwillingtodosomehardthings,notjustkickthecandowntheroad,factoriesarereopeningtheirdoors,businessesarehiringnewworkers,companiesthatwereshippingjobsoverseas,they’restartingtotalkaboutbringingthosejobsbacktoamerica.we’restartingtoseethat.

andletmegiveyouanexample,becauseweweretalkingaboutthis--mr.mittalandothersweretalkingaboutwhat’sdifferentnow.takealookatwhatwe’vedonewithamericanenergy.foryears,folkshavetalkedaboutreducingourdependenceonforeignoil--butwedidn’treallydoit.andwewerejustimportingmoreandmoreoil,sendingmoreandmoremoneyoverseas.gaspriceskeepongoingupandupandup.wefinallydecidedweweregoingtodosomethingaboutit.

soweinvestedinnewamericantechnologiestoreverseouraddictiontoforeignoil,doublewindpower,doublesolarpower,producemoreoil,producemorenaturalgas,anddoitallinawaythatisactuallybringingdownsomeofourpollution,makingourentireeconomymoreenergy-efficient.today,wegeneratemorerenewableenergythanever.weproducemorenaturalgasthananybodyintheworld.justyesterday,welearnedthatforthefirsttimesince1995,theunitedstatesofamericaproducesmoreofourownoilhereathomethanwebuyfromothercountries.firsttimesince1995.(applause.)andthat’sabigdeal.that’swhatamericahasdonethesepastfiveyears.

andthatisahugecompetitiveadvantageforus.partofthereasoncompaniesnowwanttomove--wewerejusttalkingaboutit--thisplant,ifit’slocatedingermany,energycostsaredouble,maybetriple;sameinjapan.sothisgivesusabigedge.butthisisalsoimportant:wereachedthemilestonenotjustbecausewe’reproducingmoreenergy,butalsowe’rewastinglessenergy.andthisplantisagoodexampleofit.wesetnewfuelstandardsthatdoublethedistanceourcarsandtrucksgoonagallonofgasbythemiddleofthenextdecade.thatsavestheaveragedriver,everybodyhere,morethan$8,000atthepumpoverthelifeofanewcar.youlikethat?(applause.)welaunchedinitiativestoputpeopletoworkupgradingourhomes,andourbusinesses,andourfactoriessowe’rewastinglessenergy.allthatsavesbusinessesmoneyontheirenergybills.yourplantisoneofthehundredstoanswerthatcall.andifyou’resavingmoneyonenergycosts,thatmeansyoucaninvestinequipment,investinworkers,hiremorepeople,producemoreproducts.

andhere’sanotherthing:betweenmorecleanenergy,lesswastedenergy,thecarbonpollutionthat’shelpingtowarmtheplanet,thatactuallystartsgoingdown.andthat’sgoodnewsforanybodywhocaresaboutleavingaplanettoourkidsthatisasbeautifulastheonewegotfromourparentsandourgrandparents.(applause.)soit’sawin-win.oureconomykeepsgrowing,creatingnewjobs,whichmeansthatstrengtheningourenergysecurityandincreasingenergyefficiencydoesn’thavetobeachoicebetweentheenvironmentandtheeconomy--wecandoboth.

sowe’vetackledthewayweuseenergy.that’smakingamericamorecompetitiveinordertoattractgoodjobs.we’vealsotackledourdeficits.alotofpeoplehavebeenconcernedaboutdeficits.sinceitookoffice,wecuttheminhalf.thatmakesamericamoreattractivewhenitcomestobusinessinvestmentdecisions.

andwe’vetackledabrokenhealthcaresystem.obviously,we’renotdoneyet.(applause.)obviously,we’renotdoneyet.butoverthelastthreeyears,healthcarecostshavegrownattheslowestpaceonrecord.andthisisagreatplacetoworkthankstoagreatsteelworkersunionandcooperationbetweenmanagementandlabor.(applause.)butjustkeepinmindthatifbusinesses’healthcarecostsaregrowingataboutone-thirdtheratethattheywereadecadeago,thatmakesamericaamoreaffordableplacetodobusiness,anditalsomeansthattheinvestorshere,ifthey’reputtinglessmoneyintohealthcarecosts,theycanputmoremoneyintermsofhiringmoreworkersandmakingsurethatthey’regettinggoodpay.

sothat’swhatallthesetoughdecisionsareabout:reversingtheforcesthathavehurtthemiddleclassforalong,longtime,andbuildinganeconomywhereanybody,ifyouworkhard,youcangetahead.that’swhatplantslikethishavealwaysbeenabout.it’snotthatit’seasywork.butitmeansifyouworkhard,you’vegotachancetobuyahome,you’vegotachancetoretire,you’vegotachancetosendyourkidstoschool,youhaveachancetomaybetakealittlevacationonceinawhile.that’swhatpeoplestrivefor.andthat’swhatwillmakethe21stcenturyanamericancentury,justlikethelastcenturywas.

butididn’trunforpresidenttogobacktowherewewere.iwantustogoforward.iwantustogotowardsthefuture.(applause.)iwantustogetustowhereweneedtobe.iwanttosolveproblems,notjustputthemoff.iwanttosolveproblems.andwe’vegottodomoretocreatemoregood,middle-classjobsliketheonesfolkshavehere.

thatmeanswe’vegottodoeverythingwecantoprepareourchildrenandourworkersforthecompetitionthatthey’regoingtoface.weshouldbedoingeverythingwecantohelpputsomesortofadvancededucationwithinreachformoreyoungpeople.noteverybodyhasgottogotoafour-yearcollege,butjustlookingattheequipmentaroundhere,you’vegottohavealittlebitofadvancedtraining.itmaycomethroughacommunitycollegeoritmaycomethroughatechnicalschool,butwe’vegottomakesureyoucangetthateducation,yourkidscangetthateducationwithoutgoingbroke--withoutgoingbroke,withoutgoingintodebt.(applause.)sowe’reworkingonthat.

anotherthingweshouldbeworkingon:fixingabrokenimmigrationsystem.(applause.)whenyouthinkaboutthiswholeregion,alotoffolksforget,butalmosteverybodywhoworkedinthatplant100yearsagocamefromsomeplaceelse.andsowe’vegotnowanewgenerationofhopeful,strivingimmigrants;we’vegottomakesurethattheycomelegallyandthatwedowhatweneedtosecureourborders,butwe’vealsogottomakesurethatwe’reprovidingthemopportunityjustlikeyourparents,grandparents,great-grandparentsreceivedwhentheyarrivedatthisplant.andthat’simportant.(applause.)and,bytheway,itwillhelpoureconomygrowbecausethenthey’repayingtaxesandhelpingtoinvestandbuildhereinamerica.

weshoulddoeverythingwecantorevitalizeamericanmanufacturing.manufacturingis--that’sthehubofoureconomy.whenourmanufacturingbaseisstrong,theentireeconomyisstrong.alotofservicejobsdependonservicingmanufacturingjobs.and,typically,manufacturingjobspayalittlebitbetter.sothat’sbeenapath,atickettothemiddleclass.sowhenwemakesteelandcars,makethemhereinamerica,thathelps.likeisaid,theworkmaybehardbutitgivesyouenoughmoneytobuyahomeandraiseakid,retireandsendyourkidstoschool.

andthosekindsofjobsalsotellussomethingelse.it’snotjusthowmuchyougetinyourpaycheck,it’salsoasenseof,i’mmakingsomethingandi’mhelpingtobuildthiscountry.ithelpsestablishasenseof--thatwe’reinvestedinthiscountry.(applause.)ittellsuswhatwe’reworthasacommunity.oneofyourcoworkers,mikelonga--where’smike?

inmystateoftheunionaddress,italkedabouthowwecreatedamerica’sfirstmanufacturinginnovationinstituterighthereinohio.marcykapturhasbeenabigproponentofthis,becausesheknowshowimportantmanufacturingis.iwanttocreatemoreofthem--placeswherebusinessesareworkingwithuniversitiesandthey’repartneringtofigureoutwhatarethenewmanufacturingtechniquesthatkeepusatthecuttingedgesothatchinaorgermanydon’tgetaheadofusintermsoftheequipmentthat’sbeinginvested.wewanttobeatthecuttingedge,sowhatwe’reproducingisalwaysthebeststeel,it’salwaysthebestcars.butthatrequiresresearchandinvestment.

andletmemakeonelastpoint.wehavetodoeverythingwecantomakesureeveryamericanhasaccesstoquality,affordablehealthcare,period.(applause.)youmayhavereadwehadsomeproblemslastmonthwithwebsites.i’mnothappyaboutthat.andthenihadapressconferencetodayandisaid,youknowwhat,wefumbledtheballintermsoftherollout.

butwealwaysknewthiswasgoingtobehard.there’sareasonwhyfolkshadtriedtodoitfor100yearsandhadn’tdoneit.andit’scomplicated.therearealotofplayersinvolved.thestatusquoisentrenched.andso,yes,there’snoquestiontherolloutontheaffordablecareactwasmuchtougherthanweexpected.butiwanteverybodyheretounderstand,iamgoingtoseethisthrough.(applause.)iwantmillionsofamericanstomakesurethatthey’renotgoingbrokewhentheygetsickandtheycangotoadoctorwhentheirkidsgetsick.andwe’renotapologizingforthat.wearegoingtogetthisdone.(applause.)

sowe’regoingtogetthewebsiteworkingthewayit’ssupposedto.theplansarealreadyouttherethatareaffordableandpeoplecangettaxcredits.we’regoingtohelpfolkswhoseoldplanshavebeencanceledbytheinsurers--manyofthemweren’tverygood--andwe’regoingtomakesurethattheycangetnewer,betteroptions.

butwe’renotgoingtogobacktotheoldsystem,becausetheoldsystemwasbroken.andeveryyear,thousandsofamericanswouldgetdroppedfromcoverageordeniedtheirmedicalhistoryorexposedtofinancialruin.youguysareluckythatyouworkatacompanywithastrongunionthatgivesyougoodhealthbenefits.(applause.)butyouknowfriendsandfamilymemberswhodon’thaveit,andyouknowwhatit’slikewhentheygetsick.youknowhowscaryitisforthemwhentheygetsick.orsomeofthemhavehealthinsurance--theythinktheydo--andtheygetsick,andsuddenlytheinsurancecompanysays,oh,i’msorry,youowe$50,000.that’snotcovered.ortheyjackupyourpremiumsoyoucan’tafforditbecauseyouhadsomesortofpreexistingcondition.thathappenseveryday.

sowe’renotgoingtoletthathappen.we’renotgoingtoletfolkswhopaytheirpremiumsontimegetjerkedaround.andwe’renotgoingtowalkawayfromthe40millionamericanswithouthealthinsurance.(applause.)wearenotgoingtogutthislaw.wewillfixwhatneedstobefixed,butwe’regoingtomaketheaffordablecareactwork.andthosewhosaythey’reopposedtoitandcan’tofferasolution,we’llpushback.(applause.)

igottogiveyourgovernoralittlebitofcredit.johnkasich,alongwithalotofstatelegislatorswhoareheretoday,theyexpandedmedicaidundertheaffordablecareact.andthinkaboutthat.justthatonestepmeansasmanyas275,000ohioansaregoingtohavehealthinsurance.anditdoesn’tdependonawebsite.that’salreadyhappeningbecauseoftheaffordablecareact.(applause.)
