Blendsdealwiththeactionofabridgingandthencombiningvariouslexemestoformanewword.However,theprocessofdefiningwhichwordsaretrueblendsandwhicharenotismorecomplicated.Thedifficultycomesindeterminewhichpartsofanewwordare"recoverable"(itsrootcanbedistinguished).tn

Therearemanytypesofblends,basedonhowtheyareformed.Algeo,alinguist,proposeddividingblendsintothreegroups^:

Mostblendsareformedbyoneofthefollowingmethods:

Thebeginningofonewordisaddedtotheendoftheother(seeportmanteauword.Forexample,brunchisablendofbreakfastandlunch.Oneofthetwomaybeawholewordifitisshort.Thisisthemostcommonmethodofblending.Amonosyllabicwordisdividedintoitsonsetandrimeifnecessary.Ablendofthistypetypicallyhasthesamenumberofsyllablesasthesecondword.

Theerrorsarebasedonsimilarityofmeanings,ratherthanphonologicalsimilarities,andthemorphemesorphonemesstayinthesamepositionwithinthesyllabled.
