Thisfar-flungoutragetookaimatgeneticallymodifiedcrops.Buttheprotests
backfired:allthedestroyedplantswereconventionallybred.Ineachcase,
activistsmistookordinaryplantsforGMvarieties.
Ifseasytounderstandwhy.Inaway,GMcrops-nowonsome109million
acresoffarmlandworldwide—areinvisible.Youcan'tsee,tasteortoucha
geneinsertedintoaplantorsenseitseffectsontheenvironment.Youcan't
tell,justbylooking,whetherpollencontainingaforeigngenecanpoison
butterfliesorfertilizeplantsmilesaway.Thatinvisibilityispreciselywhat
worriespeople.How,exactly,willGMcropsaffecttheenvironment—and
whenwillwenotice?
AdvocatesofGM,ortransgenic,cropssaytheplantswillbenefitthe
environmentbyrequitingfewertoxicpesticidesthanconventionalcrops.But
criticsfearthepotentialrisksandwonderhowbigthebenefitsreallyarc.nWc
