9、。 6 The Goat and the Goatherd A GOATHERD had sought to brin g back a stray goat to his flock. He whistled and sounded his horn in vain; the straggler paid no attention to the s ummons. At last the Goatherd threw a stone, and breaking i ts horn, begged the Goat not to tell his master. The Goat replie

10、d, Why, you silly fellow, the horn will speak thoug h I be silent. 11、d and bought a lump of gold, which he buri ed in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at dail y. One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to wa tch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and dig ging down, came

12、to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visi t, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentation s. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, ra y do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fan

14、朋友,別再難過(guò)了,那塊金子雖是你買(mǎi)來(lái)的,但并不是你真正擁有的。 去拿一 塊石頭來(lái),代替金塊放在洞里,只要你心里想著那是塊金子,你就會(huì)很高興。這樣 與你擁有 真正的金塊效果沒(méi)什么不同。依我之見(jiàn),你擁有那金塊時(shí),也從沒(méi)用過(guò)?!?這 故事說(shuō)明,一切財(cái)物如不使用等于沒(méi)有。 8 The Wolf and the Lamb WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fol d, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to j ustify to the Lamb the Wo

15、lfs right to eat him. He thus addressed him: Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me. Indeed, bleated the Lamb in a mournful tone of voice, I was not then born. 16、k of my well. No, exclaimed the Lamb, I never yet drank water, for as yet my mother s milk is both food and drink to me. Upon which the Wolf seized him a nd ate him up, saying, Well! I wont remain supperless, even though yo u refute every one of my imputations. The tyrant will always find a p retext

18、be spared his life. The Weasel ref used, saying that he was by nature the enemy of all birds. The B at assured him that he was not a bird, but a mouse, and thus wa s set free. Shortly afterwards the Bat again fell to the ground and was caught by another Weasel, whom he likewise entreated no t to eat

19、 him. The Weasel said that he had a special hostility t o mice. The Bat assured him that he was not a mouse, but a bat, and thus a second time escaped. It is wise to turn circumstance s to good account. 蝙蝠掉落在地上,被黃鼠狼叼去,他請(qǐng)求饒命。黃鼠狼說(shuō)絕不會(huì)放過(guò)他, 自己生來(lái)痛恨鳥(niǎo)類(lèi)。蝙蝠說(shuō)他是老鼠,不是鳥(niǎo),便被放了。后來(lái)蝙蝠又掉 落了下來(lái),被另一只黃鼠狼叼住,他再三請(qǐng)求不要吃他。這只黃鼠狼說(shuō)

20、他 恨一切鼠類(lèi)。蝙蝠改口說(shuō)自己是鳥(niǎo)類(lèi),并非老 鼠,又被放了。這樣,蝙 蝠兩次改變了自己的名字,終于死里逃生。 這故事說(shuō)明,我們遇事要隨 機(jī)應(yīng)變方能避免危險(xiǎn)。 10 The Ass and the Grasshopper AN ASS having hea rd some Grasshoppers chirping, was highly encha nted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody, demanded what sort of food they live d on to give them such beauti
