1、必修 2Un it1 Cultural relicsReadi ngIN SEARCH OF THE AMBER ROOMFrederick WilliamI ,the Ki ng of Prussia , could n ever have imag ined that his greatest gift to the Russia n people wouldhave such an amaz ing history . This gift was the Amber Room,_was given this name because several tons of amber were

2、used to make it. The amber which was selected had abeautiful yellow-brown colour like honey . The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days. It wasalso a treasure decorated with gold and jewels, which took the coun trys best artists about ten years(make).In fact , the room was

3、not made to be a gift . It was designed for the palace of FrederickI. However, the next King ofPrussia, Frederick William ,_the amber room belong ed, decided not tokeep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great._(做為回報),the Czar sent him a troop ofhis best soldiers. So the Amber Room because part of

4、the Czars win ter palace in St Petersburg. About four metres long,the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors .Later, Catherinenhad the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburgshe spent her summers. Shetold her artists toadd more details to itn 1770 the room was comple

5、ted the way she wan ted . Almost six hun dred candles lit the room, and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly, although the Amber Room was considered one ofthe _ (won der) of the world, it is now miss ing .In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg . This was a time _ the twoc

6、oun tries were at war._the Nazis could get to the summer palace, the Russia ns were ableto remove some furn iture and small art objects from the Amber Room . However, some of the Nazis secretly stole theroom itself. In less tha n two days 100,000 pieces were put in side twen ty-seve n wooden boxes.
