40、sure of 3-5 MPa and a temperature of 500-800 at the end of the compression stroke. The fuel used has a self-ignition temperature of some 400 and therefore ignites when injected into the combustion chamber at an injection pressure of 10-25 MPa.In the petrol engine a homogeneous combustible mixture, s

41、upplied by the carburetor, is ignited by the sparking plug, but on the compression ignition engine the thorough mixing together of the fuel and air for complete combustion must be accomplished within the cylinder during some 35-40of crankshaft revolution. This presents difficulty and is accomplished

42、 by using a penetrating spray of finely-divided fuel and considerable turbulence of the compressed air in the cylinder. Even so, only some 80% of air supplied can be utilized, but the spark ignition engine can consume all the air induced.Compared with the spark ignition engine the high combustion pr

43、essures need a strong, heavy and costly construction, while the fine limits to which the fuel pump and injectors must be manufactured add to the expense. Even with extensive light alloy construction, the power to weight ratio is lower than for a petrol engine. Starting may present more difficulty du

44、e to the high compression pressure and the heat required for fuel ignition. Idling is less smooth, acceleration slower, maximum rev/min are lower and imperfect combustion will result in a lower bmep and obnoxious exhaust smoke.On the other hand, the higher compression ratio gives a greater thermal e

45、fficiency and thus an increased economy km/L. The fuel is cheaper and has a much reduced fire risk. Engine torque is greater at low engine speeds and in practice considerably less maintenance is required.
