1、Unit 6Santa AnaThe Santa Ana WindsNamed after Southern Californias Santa Ana Canyon and a fixture of local legend and literature, the Santa Ana is a blustery, dry and warm (often hot) wind that blows out of the desert. In Raymond Chandlers story Red Wind, the title being one of the offshore winds ma
2、ny nicknames, the Santa Anas were introduced as those hot dry winds that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze酒宴,酒會 party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study t
3、heir husbands necks. Anything can happen. Local legends associate the hot, dry winds with homicides and earthquakes, but these are myths. Actually, the Santa Anas develop when the desert is relatively cold, and are thus most common during the cool season stretching
5、 from October through March. High pressure builds over the Great Basin (e.g., Nevada) and the cold air there begins to sink. However, this air is forced downslope which compresses and warms it at a rate of about 10C per kilometer (29F per mile) of descent. As its temperature rises, the relative humi
6、dity drops; the air starts out dry and winds up at sea level much drier still. The air picks up speed as it is channeled through passes and canyons. Santa Anas can cause a great deal of damage. The fast, hot winds cause vegetation to dry out, increasing the danger of wildfire. Once the fires start,
7、the winds fan the flames and hasten their spread. The winds create turbulence and establish vertical wind shear (in which winds exhibit substantial change in speed and/or direction with height), both posing aviation hazards. The winds tend to make for choppy surf conditions in the Southern Californi
8、a Bight, and often batter the north coast of Santa Catalina Island, including Avalon cove and the islands airport. This page demonstrates the development of a Santa Ana event in the Los Angeles basin. This simulation was made using the MM5 mesoscale model using initial and boundary information from
9、the NCEP Eta (now called NAM) model. The model, employing three nested domains, having 54, 18 and 6 km resolutions, was started at 12Z (4 AM PST) on November 3rd, 2002, and integrated for 54 hours. For instance: The hours you work per day, per week, including options such as flextime and telecommuting. The work environment, including how employees interact, the degree of co
33、mpetition, and whether its a fun or hostile environment - or something in-between. The dress code, including the accepted styles of attire* and things such as casual days. The office space you get, including things such as cubicles*, window offices, and rules regarding display of personal items. The
34、 training and skills development you receive, which you need both on the job and to keep yourself marketable for future jobs and employers. Onsite perks, such as break rooms, gyms and play rooms, daycare facilities, and more. The amount of time outside the office youre expected to spend with co-work
35、ers. Interaction with other employees, including managers and top management. How do you uncover the corporate culture of a potential employer? The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months, but you can get close to it
36、through research and observation. Understanding culture is a two-step process, starting with research before the interview and ending with observation at the interview. If you get a chance to meet with other employees, you can ask some questions to try and get a handle on an organizations corporate
37、culture. Such as: Whats it really like to work here? What skills and characteristics does the company value? How do people get promoted around here? The bottom line is that you are going to spend a lot of time in the work environment and to be happy ,successful and productive, youll want to be in a

The dictionary defines
