stson20,186peopleatdifferentstagesoftheirlives.TheAmericantestswereonindividuals
agedbetween29and35.TheBritishtestswereconductedon50-year-
olds.TheGermantestsranthewholespanofadultlife,from18to98.
Birthorder,theyfound,hadnoeffectonpersonality:first-
bornswerenomore,norless,likelythantheiryoungersiblingstobehardworking,outgoingor
anxious.Butitdidaffectintelligence.Inafamilywithtwochildren,thefirstchildwasmoreint
elligentthanthesecond60%ofthetime,ratherthanthe50%thatwouldbeexpectedbychan
ce.Onaverage,thistranslatedtoadifferenceof1.5IQpointsbetweenfirstandsecondsiblin
