Bridge

connects

Bridge
that
connects
ElmwoodtoAvondale.
Originally
builtin
1930,
the
Huey
P.
Long
bridgeopened
an
expansion
in
the
summer
of
2013,
making
theconnection
between
the
East
and
West
Banks
much
faster,safer,
and
more
convenient.
This
projectis
touted
as
animportant
step
in
allowing
the
West
Bank
to
reachits
fullpotential.AVONDALE
SHIPYARDSThe
Avondale
Shipyards,
with
nearly
8,000
feet
of
riverfrontaccess
on
the
West
Bank
of
the
Mississippi,
wasthe
long-timedriver
of
economic
activity
on
the
West
Bank
of
JeffersonParish.
At
itspeak,
the
shipyards
employed
an
estimated26,000
workers
building
barges,
oil
rigs,
and
warships.
Theshipyard’s
closing
in
2014
wasa
big
hit
to
the
economyof
thearea.
The
land
was
purchasedin
October
2018
and
the
newowners
have
plans
to
revitalize
the
206-acre
site
asa
majorplayer
in
the
region’s
shipping
and
distribution
sectors
with
amix
of
both
large
and
small

Jefferson
Parish

this

purchase
an

a
weightedassessment
of
these
factors,
the
master
plansought
to
locate
development
within
the
areas
thatreceived
the
highest
suitability
score,
while
locating
parkland,
preserve,
and
water
managementfeatures
on
portions
of
the
site
that
received
lower
suitability

gathering
within
the
park
and
for
adjacent
properties,
creating
an
iconicpublic
space
for
the
West
Bank.Embrace
the
environment
and
create
a
gateway
to
nature.

master
planseeks
to
embrace
the
natural
elements
of
the
sitewhich
makeit
unique
and
connectit
to
the
many
natural
resources
beyond
thesite.
Churchill
Parkis
intended
to
weavea
fabric
ofgreen
spaces
and
trail
connections
throughout
the
development,
and
provide
for
a
variety
of
open
spaces,
fromplazas
and
parks,
toponds
and
wetland
preserves.Create

flexible

the

for
the
master
planis

on
a
flexiblegrid

accommodatea
wide
variety
of
potential
development
