Bridge

Bridge

connects

ElmwoodtoAvondale.

Originally

builtin

1930,

the

Huey

P.

Long

bridgeopened

an

expansion

in

the

summer

of

2013,

making

theconnection

between

the

East

and

West

Banks

much

faster,safer,

and

more

convenient.

This

projectis

touted

as

animportant

step

in

allowing

the

West

Bank

to

reachits

fullpotential.AVONDALE

SHIPYARDSThe

Avondale

Shipyards,

with

nearly

8,000

feet

of

riverfrontaccess

on

the

West

Bank

of

the

Mississippi,

wasthe

long-timedriver

of

economic

activity

on

the

West

Bank

of

JeffersonParish.

At

itspeak,

the

shipyards

employed

an

estimated26,000

workers

building

barges,

oil

rigs,

and

warships.

Theshipyard’s

closing

in

2014

wasa

big

hit

to

the

economyof

thearea.

The

land

was

purchasedin

October

2018

and

the

newowners

have

plans

to

revitalize

the

206-acre

site

asa

majorplayer

in

the

region’s

shipping

and

distribution

sectors

with

amix

of

both

large

and

small

identified

desirable

place

for

economicdevelopment

on

the

West

Bank,

asa

part

of

the

Fairfield

Planning

480-acre

portionof

Churchill

Farms

has

been

slated

to

becomea

commercialdevelopment

known

as

Churchill

Technologyand

Business

Park,

and

40

acres

of

land

alongNicolle

Boulevard

was

donated

to

the

Jefferson

Parish

Economic

Development

Commission(JEDCO)

to

begin

this

work.

JEDCO

exercisedits

option

to

purchase

an

additional

50

acres

twoyears

later,

and

an

additional

~17

acres

has

since

been

donated.

Today,

approximately

60

acres

ofthisland

has

been

graded

raised

has

seen

parkland,

preserve,

water

managementfeatures

on

portions

of

the

site

that

received

lower

suitability

natural

Parkis

trail

development,

provide

for

a

variety

open

spaces,

wetland
