Themostimportantandlife-changingvolunteeringexperienceformecamein2023whenIdecidedthatvolunteeringlocallyjustwasnotenoughanymoreandIwenttovolunteerabroad.IspentamonthandahalfinRomaniateachingchildrenwithfeweropportunitiesEnglish.Thatexperiencenotonlyhelpedmetobettermyteachingskills,butalsocompletelychangedmeasaperson,makingmemeetpeoplefromallovertheworld.
Alloftheseexperiencesbroughtmehere,onanESN(ErasmusStudentNetwork)projectinZagrebathome.ThisisaprojectI’vebeenexcitedforalongtimebecauseofwhatitmeant.
Iwasgoingtochangemysurroundingsforalongerperiodoftime,whichobviouslymeantmorechallengesandmorepersonalgrowthforme.Don’teverletanyonetellyouthatvolunteeringissomethingyoushouldn’tdo,becauseit’soneofthebestthingsyoucouldeverdo,bothforyourselfandforthepeopleyou’regoingtohelpalongtheway.

Earlierinhercareer,sheworkedforamarinemammalemergencyresponseorganizationthateventuallyclosedduetolackoffunding.Tofillthegapleftbythegroup,Lyndastartedherownnon-profitorganization—MarineMammalsofMainein2023.Ithassinceprovidedresponseandmedicalcareformorethan3,000marinemammals.
Lynda’steamoperatesa24-hourhotlinethatrespondstocallsregardingmarinemammalsindanger.Theirpermitallowsthemtorespondtomammalsstranded(擱淺)within2,500milesofthecoastline,andherteamonlyoffershelpifthemammalisincriticalcondition.CriticallyillmammalsaretransportedtoLynda’scenterandnursedbacktohealth.Sealstypicallyrequirethreeormoremonthsofprofessionalcaretreatmentbeforetheyarereleasedbackintotheocean.
