Writethefollowingsentencesontheboard;Youhavetheflu.It'snotserious.Ask“What'saconjunctionthatwecanusetojointhesetwosentences?”Elicitbutandrewritethesentences,biningthemwithbut.Revisethataconjunctionisawordthatbinestwowords(Ihaveacoughandaheadache.),twophrases(Youshouldgetplentyofrestanddrinklotsofwater.)ortwosentences.Explainthatand,but,orandsoarecalledcoordinatingconjunctions.Ifyoufeelyourstudentsareready,youmayskipthisstep.

Writethesesentencesontheboard;It'sgoodtowashyourhands.Ithelpsyoustayhealthy.Askstudentstofindthesesentencesinthereading.(It'sthefirstsentenceinresponsec.)Ask“Whatwordjoinsthesetwosentences?”Elicitbecause.Explainthatbecauseisalsoaconjunction;itbeginsanadverbialclause.Thepartofthesentencewithbecauseisanadverb,modifyingtheotherpartofthesentence.Ask“Whatdoesthepartofthesentencewithbecauseanswer?”ElicitorprovideWhy?HelpthemformthequestionandanswerWhyisitgoodtowashyourhands?Becauseithelpsyoustayhealthy.Asaclass,formquestionsandanswers,guidingstudentstounderstand.

Askstudentstoidentifywhichsentencesinthereadingbeginwithanadverbialclause,thatisbeginwithbecauseorwhen.Writeoneofthemontheboard,forexample,Whenpeoplesneeze,wecangettheflufromtheair.Thenwritethesentencewiththeadverbialclauseattheend:Wecangettheflufromtheairwhenpeoplesneeze.Askstudentstotellyouwhatthedifferenceisbetweenthetwosentences.Pointoutthatwhenwebeginasentencewithanadverbialclause,weplaceamaaftertheclause;whentheclausedoesn'tbeginthesentence,wedon'tuseama.Youmaywishtohavestudentspractisethisbyrewritingsomeofthesentencesfromthereading,switchingtheplacementoftheadverbialclausefrombeginningtoend,andviceversa.
