Gothicfashion.Itisoneofthelargestreligiousbuildingsintheworldstandingat130metreslong,48metreswideand35metreshigh.Sadly,thechurch’sspirewasdestroyedinafireinApril2019.BackTheArcdeTriomphePhotocourtesyof(@)-grantedundercreativecommonslicence–attributionNapoleonorderedtheconstructionoftheArcdeTriomphein1806anditwasfinallyfinishedin1836.ItstandsatthecentreofthePlaceCharlesdeGaulle(alargeroadjunctioninParis)andhonoursthosewhofoughtanddiedforFranceinpastbattlesandwars.ThemonumentwasdesignedbyFrencharchitect,JeanChalgrin.Itis50metrestall,45metreswideand22metresdeep.BackSacreCoeurTheSacreCoeursitsontopofthehillofMontmarte,andofferspeopleamajesticviewoverParis.Evenbeforethechurchwasbuilt,thehillwasusedasaplaceofworship.InRomantimes,thereweretemplesbuilttohonourthegodsMercuryandMars.ItwasdesignedbyPaulAbadieandwaspaidforbydonationsfromParisians.Theirnamesareengravedonitswalls.Whenwet,thestonesrelease‘calcite’,whichcleansthestoneandkeepsitswhitecolour.BackPontd’AvignonAfteranearlywoodenbridgewasdestroyedbyLouisVIII,thestonebridgewascommissionedin1234.Thenewbridgehad22archesandwas900metreslong.FloodingoftheRh?neriverin17thcenturycauseddamagetothebridgeandseveralarcheswerelost.Nowonly4remain.ThereisafamousFrenchsongcalled‘SurLePontd’Avignon’whichtalksofdancingonthebridge.Itattractsmorethan300,000visitorsperyear.BackMontStMichelMontStMichelisatidalislandoffthecoastofNormandy,France.Inthe8thcentury,anoratory(smallchapel)wasbuiltafterBishopAubertofAvranchesissaidtohavehadavisionfromStMichael.Theabbeywasbuiltin966.Ithassurvivednumeroussiegesduringtwowarsandhasevenbeenaprison!Roughly33peopleliveonMontStMichelanditgets2.5milliontouristseveryyear.Back“MonSt.MichelCastleSunsetHDR”byMikeNortonislicensedunderCCBY2.0FrenchAlpsTheAlpsareoneofthemostpopulartouristdestinationsinEurope–inthesummerpeopleliketovisitthemountainsfortheviews.Inwinter,themountainsareperfectforwintersportslikesnowboardingandskiing.ThehighestpeakinthealpsisMontBlanc,whichis4810metreshigh.ThetownofChamonixwasthesiteofthefirsteverWinterOlympicsin1924.Over13,000speciesofplantcanbefoundintheregion.BackFoodFranceisfamousforitselegantpastries,cheesesandwines.AtypicalFrenchmealcanconsistof:horsd’?uvrestarterentréeintroductorycourse,e.g.soupplatprincipalmaincoursefromage/dessertcheeseordessertFoodPainsauchocolataresimilartocroissants,butarefilledwithchocolate.“Painauchocolat”byVictoriaCattersonislicensedunderCCBY2.0Croissantsareusuallyeatenforbreakfast,butcanalsobeeatenwithcheese,hamorothersavouryfillingsforameallaterintheday.FoodFranceisfamousforitscheese.Somecheesesaremadefromcow’smilk,whileothersaremadefromgoat’smilk.Camembert,BrieandRoquefortareeatenallovertheworld.FoodRatatouilleisathickstewcontainingtomatoes,peppersgarlic,onions,courgettesandaubergines.FoodMacaronsarebiscuitsfilledwithbuttercream.Eachcolourbiscuitrepresentsaflavour–brown=chocolateyellow=vanillaorlemongreen=pistachiopink=raspberryFoodCrepesareFrenchpancakes.Theycanbeenjoyedwithsweetfillings,likechocolateorfreshfruit,orsavouryfillings,suchascheese.FamousFrenchPeopleNapoleonBonaparte–FrenchEmperor(1769–1821)FamousFrenchPeopleZinedineZidane–Footballer(1972-present)“ZinedineZidane”byHadiaby
