Thepracticeofnaming“generations“basedonbirthyeargoesbackatleasttothesupposed

“l(fā)ost-generation“ofthelate19thcentury.Butasthetraditionslidintoanever-endingcompetition

tobethefirsttoproposethenextnamethatsticks,ithasproducedgraduallydecliningreturnsto

socialscienceandthepublicunderstanding.

Thesupposedboundariesbetweengenerationsarenomoremeaningfulthanthenames

they'vebeengiven.Thereisnoresearchidentifyingtheappropriateboundariesbetween

generations,andthereisnostatisticalbasisforrequiringthesweepingcharactertraits(特征)that
