VeryearlyonthemorningofDecember12,1936theIncidentwasimpending.ZhangXueliang,togetherwithYangHuchengorderedasquadofbodyguardstosurroundtheHuaqingPool.Theyfoughtafiercebattlethere,andwipedoutChiang’sbodyguardsinonevigorouseffort.ThesoundoffiringcametoChiangKaishek,andhewassoterrifiedthathecreptoutofthewindoithhisnightgownandslippersonly.What’smore,hehurthisspinalbone,andlostoneofhisslipperswhilecrossingoverthebackwall.HestaggeredupLishanMountain,andhidhimselfbehindastoneinthecrevicehalfwayonit.ThosebravesoldiersbegantosearchthemountainimmediatelywhentheyrushedintotheFive-RoomPaviliontofindthatChiang’shatandclotheswerestillthereandthathisquiltremainedwarm.IntheendtheyfoundChiangKaishek,andthusescortedhimtoXi’an.

InordertoavoidacivilwarandtrytestablishanationalunitedfrontfortheresistanceagainstJapan,MaoZedongonbehalfoftheC.C.P.C.insistedonapeacefulsettlementoftheIncident.Therefore,adelegationheadedbyZhouEnlaiwassenttoXi’an.ZhouEnlaiandhissuitedidalargeamountofworkthere,tookeverythingpossibleintoconsideration,andultimatelyforcedChiangKaishektoaccepttheproposalbyhistwogenerals.OnDecember25,Chiangwasfreed,andflewbacktoNanjing.TheXi’anIncidentwassopeacefullysettled.

ThepeacefulsettlementoftheIncidentputanendtotheinternalwarwhichhadlastedfortenyears,andacceleratedtheformationanddevelopmentofthenationalunitedfrontfortheanti-Japanesedrive.Moreover,itshowedthattheco-operativerelationshipsbetweenthemunistandNationalistsarrivedatanewstage.ItmarkedagreatturningpointinmodernChinesehistory.
