rs.modernizationhaveevenmorecorelegacyassets,toundergoasignificantmodernizationproject.TheyFirmsbothbigandsmallwouldbewisetosetasidesetthreegoals:buildatechnologybackboneforagilityevenmorebudgetforcoremodernization,givenandspeed,reduceoperatingcosts,andunlockandtheamountoflegacyassetsthatarecriticaltothemonetizedatacurrentlytrappedinlegacysystems.business.modernizationapproach.2business),andtherestissupportingapplicationsManyfirmsarechoosingthecloudtomodernizetheirlegacyapplications.OurCloudRadar2021analysisshowedthatcompaniesthatmoveover60%oftheirsystemstothecloudachievesignificantlyhigherperformance,especiallywhencoresystemshavebeenionstogettherearemyriadandcanbehighlycomplex,includingrewritingandgreenfielddeployments(seeFigure4).ometimesasimpleliftandshiftisthebestmovetoasformergeneralgerofproductstechnologyexplainsTakingthefirststepofmainframemodernizationbymovingittocloudreducedtheoperatingcostsforourplatform,thatFirstlythemovealeourbusinesslikeneverbeforeAndsecondly,itenabledustounlockdatatrappedinlegacysystems,whichisnowfeedinganalyticstegicprogramsAndfinallyclouddeliversnewsolutionsandenablesbetteroutcomesandexperiencesforourteammembersandspoketoprefertoeitheroptimizeapplicationsfromcloudservicesorreplatformtheapplicationbyupgradingthedatabase,operatingsystem,orprogramminglanguage(seeFigure5).Ofcourse,movingtotheclouddoesn’thavetobessomeperspectiveUsingtheInfosysART—accelerate,icationsweremodifiedtocreatenewuserexperiencesandapplications.Thisphasealsoincludesreducingdevelopmentcyclesthroughnewtoolsthat8|ModernizationRadar2022:RacetomodernizeannfosysandredeployingworkloadstotakeadvantageoftheNowthatthecloudisubiquitous,othertechnologiesandwaysofworkingaredrivingfirmstomodernize.atdataandanalyticsrankedthehighestPIsAIandmicroservicesseeFigure6).APIshaveahighlevelofmindshare.ExposingprogramsasAPIscanenablefirmstoplug-and-mstogetherleadingtowhatstomercentricityerpriseFirmsthathadahigherlevelofcomposabilityinbusinessprocesseswereabletoweathertheworstofthepandemicinawaysuperiorAPIswellfirmswillhavetorefactortheirlegacyapplications.lationingthatprocessisvitalasitcanbentoreadingmorethanadozencopiesofWarandapplicationofonlyonemillionlinesofcode.7ntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:Racetomodernizemodernizingnow.eirdataoftenlockedinthevaultsofagingCOBOL-programmedapplications.Manypractitionersciteproject-basedmethodsofvaluedelivery,reducingtheabilitytouseDevOpsforspeediersoftwaredevelopmentanddeployment.Alsoprevalentisthecostofmodernizinglegacysystems,withmanyprojectstakingovertwoyearsandmillionshypothesesinconductingthisresearchwasthatbothssandITexecutivesfearthatmodernizationwilldisruptthebusinessandtarnishbrandreputation.Wefoundthistobepartlytrue.Thoughdisruption loomed(27%),alackofskillsandtalentappearedtobemorethreatening(51%)(seeFigure7).Executiveswespoketoverifiedthisgrowingalarmintheupperranks.Manycoreapplicationsaresupportedbyagingteamsofdeveloperswithhard-to-findskills.Totrulytransformthebusiness,nicheskillssuchas“rulesexternalization,”databasemodernization,munityofpracticesformodernization,andeventapintothegigeconomy.OnlythencantheydothenecessaryduediligenceandplanningthatsuccessfuldernizationprogramsentailFirmswillneedtogetahandleoncloud-nativeprocesses,DevOps,andarchitecturalfeatssuchasdecouplingdatafromtemsTalentisalsoneededinmoreinesscapabilitiesoftenlockedwithinmainframescreens.Havingaceisalsoamust.ntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:RacetomodernizeThemoneyforreskilling,onboardingnewpersonnel,andbuyingstate-of-the-artmodernizationtechnologyivemodernizationapproachescanofmillionperprojectThatiswhytheownershipcostissuchabigproblemforsmallerfirms.Tounderstandthefinancingsourceforthesemodernizationprojectsmanyofwhichlastupto35months,weaskedrespondentsabouttheamountofdiscretionaryspendgoingtomodernization.Theaveragespendwasbetween60%and70%,provingationisabigdealformostenterprisesnsplittherespondentsintolowdiscretionaryspenders(lessthan60%oftheirbudgetsgoingonappmodernization)andhighdiscretionaryspenders(morethan72%oftheirbudgetspentonappmodernization)likelytohaveannualrevenuebillionmodernizationbudget(3%-5%)ikelytohaveahighrevenueincreaseHigherproportionofprojectsthatare>$10millionFewercorelegacyapplications,withmoresupportingvemodernizationprogramsproactivemodernizationprogramsThinkthataclearmodernizationroadmapismoreimportanttothesuccessofaprojectthanhighryspendersOftenusephasedmodernizationmethodsUsephasedmodernizationmethodslessoftenthanryspendersModernizationRadarRacetomodernizeetionaryspendersaremuchmorelikelytobebigcompanies(revenuesgreaterthan$10billion)(seeFigure8)usingstrategicbudgetsfortheirvethisisbecausetheyhaveahigherproportionofprojectsgreaterthanmodernizationprogramsinplacethanothergroups.TheselargerfirmsalsohavemoresupportingyapplicationsandoftenremarkthataclearmodernizationroadmapisneededforasuccessfulodernizationprogramTheyalsousephasedmodernizationmethodsmorethanothergroups.allerfirmsthataregrowingfast,havefewerproactiveengagementsinplaceandtypicallygoforbig-bangorcoexistentesTheyaremorelikelytobeagile,innovativecompaniesthatdomodernizationinanadhocway,modernizingsystemsofinnovationtemsofdifferentiationandsystemsr8\Sr\tr\rS\ ModernizationshouldhavelimiteddisruptiontointheenterpriseecosystemEvenalittledowntimeinmission-criticalrtnerestimatesthatjustonehourofdowntimecancostabusinessetoachievemodernizedarchitecturestranglerorphasedcoexistent,andbig-bang.approachtowardmodernizingthearchitecture.Coexistentistheabilitytorunbothmodernizedandlegacysystemsinparalleluntilthemodernizationoftechnology,processes,andpeopleiscomplete.Coexistencecanbecostly,asnewplacesinthecloudmustbesetuptotransferdatabetweenoldandnewsystems.Big-bangentailsanegacysystemswithmoreriskalongtheway.Theapproachtakendependsonaclear-eyedhecomplexityofcurrentsystemswillalsobeakeydriverinchoosingtheoptions.Abig-bangapproachisviableifapplicationsaresmallandITlandscaperequiresawholescalechange,phasedandcoexistentmethodsmightbethebetteroption.Ouranalysisfoundthatlevelsofcripplingdisruption—inwhichthewholesystemgoesofflineforsometime—significantlyreducewithcoexistentandphasedapproaches.Werecommendusinganarchitecture-firstapproachwhenadoptingthesemethods,withcloud-agnosticprogrammingtoreducevendorlock-in.Ofcourse,it’snotjustthetechnologythatneedsgovernance.Asuccessfulmodernizationrequireschangestopeopleandprocessestoo.ThismeansusingAgileandDevOpsmethodologiesandensuringtheoperatingmodelfitsthepurpose.Upskillingallemployeestoworkwithmodernizedsoftwareisalsocrucial.Whendesigningamodernizationproject,itistoputthecustomerfirstandensurechangesareintroducedincrementally,withoutasuddenandabruptdisruption.WhentheendntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:RacetomodernizeModernizationRadarRacetomodernizepriseitssystemsshouldseeminimalchangestoconsumetheservices.sneedtoseamlesslytransitionfromsupportingthelegacyapplicationstousingthemodernizedmodelThephasedorstranglerapproachisbestinthisregard.Ofrespondentsusingthismethodmoreoftenthanothermethods,28%saidstoforthecoexistentmethodHoweverwhenwelookatcripplingdisruptionthetlevelssruptionfrommodernizationprojectsintofourtiers—no,mild,significant,andcripplingdisruption.Ouranalysisfoundthat51%ofrespondentswhohadahigher-than-averagenumberofbig-bangprojects(39%ormore)experiencedmorefrequentcripplingdisruptionseeFigure13).ThefrequencyofcripplingdisruptionforphasedandcoexistentmethodswasfarThewholepointofaphasedapproachistoslowlyreplaceexistingfunctionalitieswithnewapplicationsandservicesinaphasedmannerThisisoftendonewhenreplacingacomplexsystemwithmicroservices28%canbeahugerisk.Adoptingaphasedorstranglerapproachtograduallymigratetothenewsystempatternupdatesthemodernizedstacktopointtoanewlocationbyusingwhatisknownasaroutingadeanabstractionthattalkstobothmodernizedganizationsshouldanalyzeapplicationsindepthandperformvulnerabilitiesdontsurfaceinthenewarchitecture.Thecoexistentapproach,oftendeployedinInfosys’zerodisruptionmethodisfrequentlyusedwithmoreofabig-bangcutover,themodernizedsystemrunsinstemuntilITinfrastructureandapplicationsgraduallytransitionInthezero-tionrunsoverthreephases(seeFigure14).ispatternthemodernizedapplicationisnsformedtobecomescalableflexiblemodular,anddecoupled,utilizingmicroservicesthebestofcloudofferingsfortheorganization. ntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:Racetomodernizeecutivesareinterestedinreducingthetotalcostofownership(TCO)andimprovingapplicationresilience.Firmswithhighdiscretionaryspendingnincreasingrevenuewhilegoalstelecommunications)tospeedofperformance(in,e.g.,lifesciences).AndwitheverythinghappeningsofastandbigbudgetsbeingputonthetableforualeffectivenessluctuatesacrossfirmsRetailmodernizationprograms(ofthesortconductedueandapplicationqualitybutoftenstrugglewithusernceisalsoaproblemforthatfirmsfinddifficulttosetfreenizetherewillbewinnersandsoransFirmsmustactnowtomakethebestofwhattheyhaveUpskillingwillbecritical,andamicroapproachtochange,withdeftplanningandstrategicbudget,willwinoutoverbig-bangwholesalechangesacrosspeopleprocessesandtechnologies.10CloudDevOpsandautomationallplayaroletoensureteamsworkingonchangingthelegacylandscapehitthegroundrunning—andkeeponrunning.ThoughtmustbegiventoqualityassuranceplanningtoensurethemodernizedlandscapeisfullyunctionalandoperationalAndimportantlyevenduringmodernization,thecustomermustremainhisrequiresanoperatingmodelthatbringsITtogetherwiththebusinesstorolloutnewfeaturesandcrossfunctionalteamsofAgilepractitionerscontinuouslycollaboratingtomeetuserneedsandprovideexceptionalexperiences.ModernizationRadar2022:Racetomodernizemodernization.Thesestepsencompasspeople,ssesandtechnologiesPerhapsmostimportanttheyalldependonhavingbusinessinthesameroomasITwhenmakingbigdecisions.TheyalsoallrequireC-suiteinvolvement,especiallywhencomplex,multiyearmodernizationprojectsloomlarge.Andtoovercomethefearofgettingstartedonsuchamammothundertaking,theyofferencouragementtodogreatthingsbystitchingtogetheraseriesofdefticrochangesThefourrecommendationsarebusinessoutcomes.2.Cross-pollinateAgileteamswithdeeptechnicalertise3.Useazero-disruptionmodernizationmethod.modernizationexpert.ntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:RacetomodernizejectscancostovermillionAclearmodernizationroadmapwithdefinedcommercialoutcomescanunlockfundingandcutivesThiswasthetopmostresponsehighlightedbyourrespondentswhenaskedhowtheycanachievemodernizationsuccess.InaclosesecondplacewasavalidatedbusinesscaseagainstthecommercialsofthesolutionseeFigureClearlyconcentratingonbusinessoutcomesiskey.Thevisionshouldstartatthetopofthecompanyandbecascadeddownthroughwell-definedobjectivesbusinesscase,andoverarchingvisionwasakeyfactorinourowntransformationtobecomingadigitallyresidentandglobalheadofthemodernizationpracticeatInfosys.Withadefinedroadmapinplace,employeeexperienceandbusinessprocesseslikenewhireonboardingwerereimaginedandadigitalrunwaywasestablishedthroughsmallimplementationsouteverysixweeksThisenabledInfosystobemoreresilientduringthepandemic,when99%moteworkEmployeeandclientvaluescoreswerethehighesttheyhadeverbeen.
