ModernizationshouldhavelimiteddisruptiontointheenterpriseecosystemEvenalittledowntimeinmission-criticalrtnerestimatesthatjustonehourofdowntimecancostabusinessetoachievemodernizedarchitecturestranglerorphasedcoexistent,andbig-bang.approachtowardmodernizingthearchitecture.Coexistentistheabilitytorunbothmodernizedandlegacysystemsinparalleluntilthemodernizationoftechnology,processes,andpeopleiscomplete.Coexistencecanbecostly,asnewplacesinthecloudmustbesetuptotransferdatabetweenoldandnewsystems.Big-bangentailsanegacysystemswithmoreriskalongtheway.Theapproachtakendependsonaclear-eyedhecomplexityofcurrentsystemswillalsobeakeydriverinchoosingtheoptions.Abig-bangapproachisviableifapplicationsaresmallandITlandscaperequiresawholescalechange,phasedandcoexistentmethodsmightbethebetteroption.Ouranalysisfoundthatlevelsofcripplingdisruption—inwhichthewholesystemgoesofflineforsometime—significantlyreducewithcoexistentandphasedapproaches.Werecommendusinganarchitecture-firstapproachwhenadoptingthesemethods,withcloud-agnosticprogrammingtoreducevendorlock-in.Ofcourse,it’snotjustthetechnologythatneedsgovernance.Asuccessfulmodernizationrequireschangestopeopleandprocessestoo.ThismeansusingAgileandDevOpsmethodologiesandensuringtheoperatingmodelfitsthepurpose.Upskillingallemployeestoworkwithmodernizedsoftwareisalsocrucial.Whendesigningamodernizationproject,itistoputthecustomerfirstandensurechangesareintroducedincrementally,withoutasuddenandabruptdisruption.WhentheendntInfosysLimitedModernizationRadar2022:RacetomodernizeModernizationRadarRacetomodernizepriseitssystemsshouldseeminimalchangestoconsumetheservices.sneedtoseamlesslytransitionfromsupportingthelegacyapplicationstousingthemodernizedmodelThephasedorstranglerapproachisbestinthisregard.Ofrespondentsusingthismethodmoreoftenthanothermethods,28%saidstoforthecoexistentmethodHoweverwhenwelookatcripplingdisruptionthetlevelssruptionfrommodernizationprojectsintofourtiers—no,mild,significant,andcripplingdisruption.Ouranalysisfoundthat51%ofrespondentswhohadahigher-than-averagenumberofbig-bangprojects(39%ormore)experiencedmorefrequentcripplingdisruptionseeFigure13).ThefrequencyofcripplingdisruptionforphasedandcoexistentmethodswasfarThewholepointofaphasedapproachistoslowlyreplaceexistingfunctionalitieswithnewapplicationsandservicesinaphasedmannerThisisoftendonewhenreplacingacomplexsystemwithmicroservices28%canbeahugerisk.Adoptingaphasedorstranglerapproachtograduallymigratetothenewsystempatternupdatesthemodernizedstacktopointtoanewlocationbyusingwhatisknownasaroutingadeanabstractionthattalkstobothmodernizedganizationsshouldanalyzeapplicationsindepthandperformvulnerabilitiesdontsurfaceinthenewarchitecture.Thecoexistentapproach,oftendeployedinInfosys’zerodisruptionmethodisfrequentlyusedwithmoreofabig-bangcutover,themodernizedsystemrunsinstemuntilITinfrastructureandapplicationsgraduallytransitionInthezero-tionrunsoverthreephases(seeFigure14).ispatternthemodernizedapplicationisnsformedtobecomescalableflexiblemodular,anddecoupled,utilizingmicroservicesthebestofcloudofferingsfortheorganization.
