asyouknow,craigrobinson,yourmen’sbasketballcoach,ismybigbrother.

andlastfall,craigcalledmeupandsaidthatifididn’tspeakatthisyear’scommencement,hewouldtellmomonme.andsinceourmothernowliveswithme,thatthreatactuallystillcarriessomeweight.butseriously,i’mnotheretodayjustbecausecraighasturnedtheobamasintoafamilyofbeaverbelievers.i’malsoherebecausei’mproudofeverythingthisuniversityisdoingforthiscountry.you’vebuiltoneofthemostsustainablecampusesinamerica.

you’reconductinggroundbreakingresearchoneverythingfromagriculture,tonanotechnology,tochildhoodobesity.you’reservingothersinsomanyways—tutoringchildren,joiningourarmedforces,fightinghungeranddiseasehereinamericaandaroundtheworld.soicanseewhycraigfeelssoathomehereatosu.becauseinsomanyways,thevaluesyouallembodyarethevaluesthatheandiwereraisedwith.craigandigrewuponthesouthsideofchicago.andourfamilywasclose—imeanreallyclose…literally.

mymom,mydad,craigandilivedinatinyapartment…andforyears,craigandisharedabedroomdividedbyawoodenpartitiontogiveustheillusionofseparaterooms.atnight,craigandiwouldwhispertoeachotherthroughthecracksinthatpartitionuntiloneofusfeelasleep…orourmomyelledatustobequiet.

butwhilewedidn’thavemuchspace,ourlittlehomewasburstingwithlove.wespentlotsoftimetogetherasafamily—laughingandsharingstoriesatdinnereachnight;playingboardgamesandcardsforhours,huddledaroundthekitchentable.weenjoyedthesimplepleasuresinlife…likegettingourreportcards,becausegoodgradesmeantpizzafordinner…tryingtoholdingigglesasweputshavingcreamonmydad’sglasseswhilehenapped…sleepingonthebackporchonhotsummernightswhenthetemperatureinourlittleapartmentbecameunbearable.butitwasn’tallfunandgamesgrowingupinourhouse.

ourparentswerebigbelieversineveryonedoingtheirpartaroundthehouse…craigoftencomparedsaturdaychoretimetobootcamp.andmyparentswereevenmoreseriousaboutouracademiclives.mymomtaughtmeandcraighowtoreadlongbeforekindergartenstarted.andshespenthoursvolunteeringinourneighborhoodpublicschool,makingsurewegottheeducationsheknewwedeserved.thatwasthekindofchildhoodwehad.andoneday,whenmybrotherwasabouttenyearsold,heaskedmydadasimplequestion.“dad,”hesaid,“arewerich?!?/p>

toanswerhisquestion,mydadtookhisnextpaycheckfromhisjobatthecitywaterplant…andinsteadofdepositingthatcheck,hecashedit.hethencamehomeanddumpedoutallthebillsonthekitchentable.craigwasimpressed—withallthatmoney,wemustberich。butthenmydadstartedexplainingwhereallthismoneywenteachmonth…thismuchforrent…thatmuchforgas…thismuchforgroceries.

andbythetimehewasdone,therewasn’tasinglepennyleftonthattable.craigwasshocked…andsowasi.

herewewere,twokidsgrowingupinafamilythatwasjustbarelyworkingclass…butwewereconvincedthatwewerewealthy。andgraduates,that’swhati’dliketotalkwithyouabouttoday.

i’dliketotalkaboutwhatcraigandilearnedfromourfamilyaboutleadingarichlife…nomatterhowmuchmoneyyouhave.andwhilethereareplentyoflessonsicouldshare—therearethreethati’dliketoemphasizetoday.first,nomatterwhatstrugglesorsetbacksyoufaceinyourlife,focusonwhatyouhave,notwhatyou’remissing.

mydadtaughtusthislessoneverydaybyhowhelivedhislife.hewasdiagnosedwithmultiplesclerosiswhenmybrotherandiwerestillveryyoung.andashegotsicker,itgotharderforhimtowalk…andittooklongerforhimtodresshimselfinthemorning.hehadbeenanathleteallhislife…h(huán)ewasaboxerandaswimmerinhighschool.soitmusthavebeenhardforhimtofeelhisbodydeclining…togofrombeinganactive,vibrantyoungmantobarelybeingabletomakeitupthestairs.butifhewasinpain…ifhewasatalldisappointedwithhisfate…h(huán)eneverleton.

heneverstoppedsmilingandlaughing…evenashestruggledtoprophimselfuponhiscrutchestoteachushowtocatchaball,orholdabat,orthrowapunch.andnomatterhowbadhewasfeeling,hehardlyevermissedadayofwork.becausehewasdeterminedtobeourfamily’sproviderandtogivemeandcraigopportunitieshe’dneverdreamedof.

thereisnotadaythatgoesbythatidon’tthinkaboutourdadandhowmuchhesacrificedformeandcraigtobethepeoplewearetoday.andtoday,asfirstlady,iseethatsamespirit—andthatsamekindofsacrifice—inpeopleimeetallacrossthiscountry.iseeitinparentslikemydad,strugglingtosupporttheirfamilies…andstudentslikeyou,workinghardtogetaneducation…andyoungpeoplewhoareservingthiscountryinuniform,facingchallengesthatmostofuscan’tevenimagine.

i’veseenfirsthandthesacrificesthatamerica’sheroesaremaking.

asfirstlady,ihavetheextraordinaryprivilegeofvisitingwoundedwarriorsinmilitaryhospitalsallacrossthiscountry.manyofthem,yourageoryounger,havesufferedterribleinjuries.someofthemhavelostalimb…sometimestwolimbs,orthreelimbs.

they’veendureddozensofsurgeries…they’vespentmonthslearningtowalkagainandtalkagain.butdespitethesechallenges,theypersevere…theyaren’tlookingback.theyaren’tdwellingonwhatthey’velost.

instead,they’remakingplans…they’rereimaginingtheirfutures.

theytellmethatthey’renotjustgoingtowalkagain…they’regoingtorun…andthey’regoingtorunmarathons.irecentlymetayoungnavylieutenantnamedbradsnyderwho’dbeenblindedbyaniedexplosioninafghanistan.hecompetedinthisyear’swarriorgamesasarunnerandaswimmer.andofhisservice,hesaid—andthesearehiswords,“iamnotgoingtoletblindnessbuildabrickwallaroundme…i’dgivemyeyes100timesagaintohavethechancetodowhatihavedoneandwhaticanstilldo.”

andgraduates,morethananythingelse,thatwillbethetruemeasureofyoursuccess…nothowwellyoudowhenyou’rehealthy,andhappyandeverythingisgoingaccordingtoplan.

hosedarkestmoments,youhaveachoice:doyoudwelloneverythingyou’velost。

ordoyoufocusonwhatyoustillhave,andfindawaytomoveforwardwithpassion,anddetermination,andjoy。iknowthatmanyofyouinthisgraduatingclasshavealreadyfacedthischoiceinyourownlives.taketheexampleofoneoftoday’sgraduates,vanessavasquez.

vanessa’sparentsareagriculturalworkerswithagradeschooleducation…andshecametooregonstatedeterminedtobuildabetterlifeforherfour-month-olddaughter.inadditiontobeingasinglemom,shejuggledafullcourseloadandapart-timejob.butitallpaidoff…andtoday,she’sreceivingherdegreeinconstructionengineeringandmanagement.heradvicetootheryoungpeopleisverysimple—andtheseareherwords:“withhardworkanddedication,anythingispossible.”

thenthere’sanothermemberoftheclassof2021,nicolassitts,who’searninghisdegreeinchemicalengineering.asamemberofosu’ssolarvehicleteam,nicolasspenttwoyearspainstakinglybuildingasolarcar.butwhenhetookitoutforatestdrivelastsummer,itcaughtfireandexploded…andnicolassustainedsecond-andthird-degreeburnsonhisarm,faceandleg.butinsteadofthrowinginthetowel,withinamonth,theteamwasbackatwork,buildinganother,hopefullylessexplosivecar.vanessaandnicolasandtheosusolarteamdidn’tgiveupwhenthingsgothard.

instead,theyjustdugdeeper,andworkedharder,andrefusedtogiveuponthesuccessthattheydreamedof.andthatactuallybringsmetothesecondlessoniwanttoshareaboutleadingarichlife—andthatistodefinesuccessonyourownterms.now,growingup,myparentsalwaystoldmeandcraigtobetruetoourselves.butwhenyou’reakid,it’shardtoknowwhatthatreallymeans.andasyougrowolder,often,it’sjusteasiertograbforthosegoldstarsandbrassrings.craigandibothknowthisfromexperience.aftergraduatingfromcollege,wedideverythingwethoughtweshoulddotobesuccessful.craigwenttobusinessschool...iwenttolawschool…andwegotprestigiousjobsataninvestmentbankandalawfirm.wesoonhadallthetraditionalmarkersofsuccess—thefatpaycheck,thefancyoffice,theimpressivelineonourresumes.butthetruthis,neitherofuswasallthatfulfilled.ididn’twanttobeupinsometallofficebuildingwritinglegalmemos…iwantedtobedownontheground,helpingthefolksigrewupwith.iwaslivingthedream—butitwasn’tmydream.andcraigfeltthesameway.soeventuallywequitthosecorporatejobs.iwenttoworkinthemayor’soffice…craiggotajobcoachingbasketball…andwebothtooksalarycutsthatmadeourmothercringe.butwewereexcitedaboutournewcareers.welookedforwardtogoingtoworkeverymorning.andwebothrealizedthatsuccessisn’tabouthowyourlifelookstoothers…it’sabouthowitfeelstoyou.werealizedthatbeingsuccessfulisn’taboutbeingimpressive…it’saboutbeinginspired.that’swhatitmeanstobetruetoyourself.itmeanslookinginsideyourselfandbeinghonestaboutwhatyoutrulyenjoydoing.becausegraduates,icanpromiseyouthatyou’llneverbehappyploddingthroughsomeoneelse’sideaofsuccess.

successisonlymeaningful—andenjoyable—ifitfeelslikeyourown.[pause]butofcourse,asuccessfulcareeralonedoesn’tnecessarilymakeforarichlife.

asyou’vealllearnedfromthefriendsyou’vemadeandtherelationshipsyou’veformedhereatosu,whattrulymakeslifericharethepeopleyoushareitwith.andthatbringsmetothefinallessoniwanttooffertoday—andthatis,whateveryoudo,don’tleavebehindanyunfinishedbusinesswiththepeopleyoulove.mydaddiedofcomplicationsfromhismswheniwasinmymid-twenties.andformonths,ifeltlikeicouldn’tbreathe.

ihadthisphysicalsenseofgrief,thisemptinessinmylifethatijustcouldn’tfill.

butashardasitwastolosehim,andasmuchasistillmisshim,iknewthati’dnevermissedachancetotellmydadilovedhim…andhe’dalwaysdonethesameforme.andwhenevercraigandisawhimstrugglingtowalk…andweworriedthatlifewasgettingtoohardforhim…mymomwouldalwaysreassureusthathewassoproudtobeourfatherthathefeltliketheluckiestguyevertowalktheearth.allofthatgavemeasenseofpeace—asensethatihadnounfinishedbusinesswithmydad.andthat’swhatallowedmetomoveforward.
