Whatproducessuchforceinlittleboys?Ithaslongbeenassumedthatitistheresultofchemistryinthemalebody.Scientiststoday,however,believethatthereareother,outside,factorstoo.Theysaysuchforceislearnedfromparents.

Ateamofresearchersdiscoveredthattherearestrongdifferencesbetweenhowboysandgirlsareraised:whiledaughtersintheirstudywereoftenkeptclosetotheirparents,sonswereencouragedtomoveontheirownandtodevelopindependence.

Asaresult,itiseasytounderstandwhylittlegirlsoftenperformschooltasksbetterthanboys,especiallyifthetaskrequiressittingstill,obeyingorders,andacceptingtheteacher'sideas.Agirlmaydoverywellinschool,whileaboythesameagemaybringhomelowermarks.Why,then,dosofewgirlsbecomegreatscientists?

Whileboysaretaughtinsocietytobemoreforceful,andtosolveproblemsthemselves,girls,ontheotherhand,arenotencouragedtobethisway.Girls,therefore,areoftenlimitedtogettinghighmarksinschoolforrememberingwhattheteacherhastoldthem,insteadofbeingallowedtoquestionwithoutfearlikeboys.
